Mercury Roundup (Dec. 16): Top 2 finishes for OJR’s Bechtolds, Boyertown’s Sheridan at King of the Mountain

WRESTLING

With three combined finalists, Boyertown and Owen J. Roberts wrestlers had strong showings at the King of the Mountain tournament Friday and Saturday at Central Mountain High School.

OJR senior Dillon Bechtold was the champion at 215 pounds, pinning Chambersburg’s Aiden Hight in 1:46 in the final. Bechtold pinned all four opponents in his run.

Sophomore Dean Bechtold, wrestling at 285, also was a finalist. He had four pins to reach the final where he was pinned in the second round by returning PIAA runner-up Nick Pavlechko of State College.

Boyertown had a runner-up in Gavin Sheridan at 133 pounds. Sheridan, a Navy recruit, entered into the 100-win club on Friday and added three more wins before losing a close 2-1 decision to Warrior Run’s Max Wirnsberger, a returning state medalist in 2A.

OJR’s Sam Gautreau placed third at 172, besting Greater Latrobe’s Hunter Snyder 9-3 in the medal round, Alex Brandt was sixth at 133 and Dysen Neil was eighth at 189.

Boyertown’s Owen Dykie finished sixth at 152 and a trio finished eighth in their respective brackets, Beck Babb (139), Shane Stankina (145) and Brody Ayres (215).

OJR placed fifth as a team and Boyertown was eighth. Host Central Mountain won the team title.

Panther Holiday Classic

Hill School had four medalists in the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius College. Robert Pavlek (139) and Cole Albert (145) were third in their weight classes, each registering five wins in the tournament. Zak Zindle (189) was fifth and Dante Donaldson was seventh at 215.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The Wildcats were within six points in the second half but couldn’t close the gap any further in a non-league defeat to the Bulldogs on Dec. 16.

Joe Houck scored 20 to lead Wilson. Luke Fryer scored 30 for OJR and Colin King added eight.

The Golden Panthers pulled away from Upper Darby in the second and third quarters in a non-league win Saturday. Jason Green scored all of his team-high 15 points in the middle quarters while Dom Demito added 13 for PJP. Bradey Bass added 10 and Ayden Wise and Caleb Zavertnik added eight apiece.

Executive Education 74, Methacton 72

Methacton (3-2) battled back from a 20-point deficit in the second half to tie the game on a Christian Matos 3-pointer with 10 seconds left but EEAC won the game on a last-second putback. Sophomore Matos scored 22 points and Anthony Daddazio added 12 for the Warriors.

Hill School 73, Kiski School 63

Jacob Meacham scored 25 points to lead Hill into the championship of the Mercer tournament on Saturday. Logan Davis added 12 for Hill, which turned a four-point halftime deficit (32-28) into a 57-48 lead in an explosive third quarter. Hill School was to meet Western Reserve Academy (OH) in the championship game on Sunday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Perkiomen Valley 74, Penn Charter 70

Perkiomen Valley came through its stiffest test of the season from Penn Charter in a non-conference game in the PAGIRLSHOOPS Keystone Classic Basketball Tournament at the School of the Future in Philadelphia on Saturday evening. Penn Charter’s Ryan Carter was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points followed closely by teammate Kaylinn Bethea, who had 22 points. A strong Perkiomen Valley offense showed five players with double figures: Quinn Boettinger led with 22 points, followed by Grace Galbavy (14), Grace Miley (12) and Bella Bacani and Lena Stein both added 11 points apiece. Ten 3-pointers helped PV overcome the Quakers.
