Four second half turnovers doomed the Hamburg Area Hawks and sent them to a 23-8 defeat to Pequea Valley in non-league action on Oct. 24 on Hawk Hill.
The Hawks had the statistical edge against the Braves (322 total yards to 254), but turnovers and penalties (9 for 57 yards) kept the Hawks on the short end of a 23-8 score.
Pequea Valley (5-4) put the first points of the game on the board when it drove 65 yards in 7 plays early in the second quarter.
The Braves executed a screen pass to perfection, allowing the Hawks defenders deep into the backfield before quarterback Gabriel Allgyer tossed a short pass over the middle to Chad Mullen, who ran 33 yards for the score.
he Hawks (1-8) only punted once in the first half but three drives stalled in Braves territory and another resulted in a blocked field goal.
“We’re fine between the twenties, but we need to execute better (in the red zone),’ Hamburg Area head coach Damian Buggy said.
Pequea Valley took the second half kickoff and took only four plays to score, when Austin Fisher scored on a 5-yard run to give the Braves a 14-0 lead.
A 57-yard run by Jason Stolzfus helped set up the score.
The Braves took advantage of Hamburg turnovers to add to the lead.
Cheyne Claxton picked off a Hamburg pass at the Hawks 40.
Two plays later Allgyer passed to Stoltzfus, who was open deep, down the middle of the field for a 32 yard score and a 20-0 lead with 7:17 left in the third quarter.
