The Schuylkill Valley High School football team took a break from its Berks League schedule on Oct. 17 with a game against Donegal in Mr. Joy. For the most part, it was a defensive battle with Donegal ending up on top, 20-14.
Led by the rushing of Ed Shuttleworth, the Schuylkill Valley offense managed just 195 total yards, while Donegal racked up 331 yards. Turnovers and penalties hurt the Panthers as well.
It was Donegal that got on the board first. A 58-yard touchdown pass resulted in the first score of the game. The extra point was no good and Donegal held a 6-0 lead. Donegal added to is lead in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Donegal tried to make up for missing the extra point on the first touchdown by attempting a two-point conversion on this one. But the Panther defense held and the score remained 12-0 in favor of Donegal.
The Panthers much needed a score before halftime to give them some momentum heading into the second half. Shuttleworth gave them that score when he ran in from two yards out for the touchdown. Frank Lisa successfully kicked the extra point and the lead was cut to 12-7 heading into halftme.
The third quarter was scoreless, but Donegal opened things back up in the fourth quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass. This time, the two-point conversion was good and Donegal held a 20-7 lead.
The Panthers made it a close game once again when Shuttleworth found the end zone once again with a run from 10 yards out. Lisa added the extra point to make it 20-14.
Schuylkill Valley had a chance to win it, but a muffed punt gave Donegal the ball back and run out the clock.
