Conestoga’s Brendan Murphy is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

Murphy, a junior attackman, leads the Pioneers in assists and is second on the team in scoring. He also plays lacrosse for the Pa. Rough Riders, who won the IMLCA Cup last summer. 8. Murphy also plays football for the Pioneers and is the treasurer for the Lewis Elkin Club at Conestoga, which raises money and gives back to an elementary school in Philadelphia. Conestoga boys’ lacrosse head coach Brody Bush said, “Brendan is a very coachable player whose efforts are shown through his productivity on the field. He works extremely hard on his game and is a student of lacrosse.”

Q: You have played attack your whole career. What in your opinion is the most important attribute needed to become a good attackman?

A: The most important attribute to a good attackman is how well he can read a defense or defender and figure out his next move.

Q: What aspects of your game did you work on most during the off-season?

A: During the off-season I worked most on my speed and agility.

Q: Tell us a little about your start in lacrosse. What originally attracted you to lacrosse? Who have been your most important lacrosse mentors, and what was the most important thing each of them taught you?

A: Both my parents played lacrosse in high school and my mom played at University of Richmond so they were quick to introduce me to the sport. I played many different sports when I was younger but lacrosse was always my favorite. My most important lacrosse mentors have been Bob Lee, and my parents. Mr. Lee was my youth lacrosse coach and has always helped me out. He taught me a lot about the game and has helped make me who I am. My parents have and continue to help me with all aspects of lacrosse. Whether it is mental or talking about a specific play in a game, they are always there to help.

Q: Briefly describe for us your pre-game preparation (physical, mental) on the day of a game.

A: My pre-game preparation on game day is usually the same. For home games I usually will go out and take some shots whether it is by myself or with a few other people. After that I will do some wall ball for five minutes and then sit in the locker room and listen to music. There is usually music playing in the locker so I will either listen to that, or if I don’t like what is on, I will put on headphones and listen to my own music. I usually will wear eye black as well. For away games, I tend to just listen to my own music or talk with teammates on the bus ride over.

Q: What in your opinion have been the biggest keys to your scoring proficiency?

A: First, being surrounded by such a talented group of teammates I am presented with many opportunities to score as well as assist through their play. Second, the coaching staff is always behind me and gives me confidence to do well

Q: You wear uniform jersey No. 25 for Conestoga lacrosse. Is there a reason you picked this number?

A: I wear No. 25 because my favorite lacrosse player growing up was Pat Heim, and he wore No. 25.

Q: What is your favorite subject in school? What do you think you would like to major in at college?

A: My favorite school subject is History. In college I would like to major in something in the business field.
