Reporter/Times Herald Softball Roundup: Volpe Ks 15, North Penn shuts out CB South

North Penn 9, Central Bucks South 0 >> Mady Volpe struck out 15 in a pitching a one-hitter while at the plate the Coastal Carolina commit drove in three runs as North Penn rolled to an SOL Colonial Division shutout victory Wednesday.

Volpe was 3-for-4 while Carley DiGiuseppe went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Knights (5-0, 4-0 division), who grabbed a 5-0 lead with a five-run bottom of the second. Sarah Sabocsik was 2-for-4 with two runs and Bri Wilmont hit a triple.

Nicole Pilla collected the lone hit for Central Bucks South (1-4, 1-3) with a two-out single in the top of the first. Volpe proceeded to retire the next 15 Titan batters before allowing a two-out walk in the sixth.

Rachel Lowry brought in the Knights’ first run in the second with a bases-loaded RBI ground out. Sophia Collins scored on a wild pitch while a Julia Shearer RBI sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Volpe extended the margin to 5-0 with a two-RBI single.

North Penn added a run in both the third and fourth then plated two in the fifth.

Hatboro-Horsham 4 Quakertown 1 >> Kendal Leitner hit a home run and struck out 15 while Hatboro-Horsham broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to best Quakertown in the SOL Liberty matchup.

Kayla Tauber went 2-for-3 with a double and gave the Hatters (3-0, 3-0 division) a 2-1 lead in the sixth with her RBI single. Tauber scored on Amaya Lundy’s RBI double with Lundy coming home on a RBI single by Abby Waeltz.

Leitner connected on a solo homer for a 1-0 HH lead in the second. In the circle, she allowed one run – earned – on six hits and one walk in a complete-game effort.

Laura Morelock pulled Quakertown (5-2, 3-1) even 1-1 with an RBI double in the top of the third. Morelock was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles while Mary Wilkinson went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Souderton 14, Pennridge 4 (5 innings) >> Riley York was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and collected all three of her RBIs as Souderton erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to top Pennridge for a five-inning SOL Colonial win.

Abby Burns went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs and also struck out eight in earning the pitching victory. She gave up four runs – all earned – on five hits and did not walk a batter.

Taylor Nelson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for the Indians (5-2, 2-2), who snapped a two-game losing skid. Sierra Ripka and Ryan Zimmerman each had two RBIs while Megan Kummery and Josalyn Nelligan both scored twice.

Souderton struck for its first four runs in the bottom of the third but Pennridge (2-3, 1-3) responded with four of its own in the top of the fourth – Mackenzie Owens’ three-run home run tying the game 4-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, York gave Souderton a 5-4 lead with an RBI double. Maya Smith scored on a wild pitch while RBI singles from Kayley York and Nelson made it 8-4. Ripka and Burns both hit two-RBI doubles, pushing the margin to 12-4. Riley York ended the game with a walk-off two-RBI single.

Catelyn Thrush was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Rams .

Wissahickon 6, Upper Dublin 4 >> Wissahickon’s Grace Franczyk was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs as the Trojans broke a 2-2 tie by score three times in the top of the fifth and held on to claim the SOL Liberty victory.

Emma Clayborn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and earned a complete-game win in the circle for Wissahickon, giving up four runs on four hits, walking four and striking out five. Katelyn Fitzgerald finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs while Luca Penna was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The Trojans (2-3, 2-1 division) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before Upper Dublin knotted the contest on Avery Lennon’s two-RBI single in the second.

Wissahickon went up 5-2 with its three-spot in the fifth then tacked on a run in the seventh. The Cardinals plated two runs in the seventh but couldn’t continue the rally and prevent their third straight loss.

Rachel Bilger hit a pinch-hit double in the seventh for UD (1-3, 1-3).

Bristol 13, Dock Mennonite 2 (5 innings) >> Bristol built an 8-2 lead after four innings then scored five runs in the fifth to beat Dock Mennonite in the Bicentennial Athletic League contest.

Maggie Dowell and Jocelyn Pfleiger both hit doubles for Dock while Melissa Moyer, Anna Smith and Kaci Alderfer each had a single.
