Lansdale Catholic brings it all together in win over Dock Mennonite

LANSDALE >> Tough defense, strong goaltending and an offense that simply overflowed all made for a day of celebration for the Lansdale Catholic girls lacrosse team.

“The attacking really blew up. We had some unassisted goals but we had a lot more assisted goals. I love it when I see my girls connecting on the field,” said Crusaders coach Jamie McCarney after Tuesday’s clash with Dock.

“I think everyone came out to play, even in the cold weather,” said senior Grace Picozzi.

Already a 100-goal scorer for her career, Picozzi added six more in an impressive 19-7 win over the Pioneers, as LC notched its first win of the young season.

“The defense played tough and Caroline (Kerr) had a lot of big saves,” McCarney said. “They were really connecting with one another. Some of the girls are still getting used to the plays that we run but we really started to find each other in the second half and connected. I love nothing more than seeing assisted goals and celebrating one another.”

Sam Beyerle scored four goals, Grace Marchese had a hat trick, and Kate Fredrickson, Emily Simpson and Ava Mercier all added two goals each.

Simpson had a pair of assists, and Beyerle, Holly Wunder and Kaylei Martin each notched one in a cohesive attack.

“Coming off the Souderton game yesterday, we really stepped it up as a team,” said Picozzi, who also added an assist. “Everyone’s really excited to be here this year. We didn’t lose many players from last year so it’s kind of the same team, which we’re really excited about. We’re starting fresh and really going for it this year.”

Lansdale Catholic (1-2) also did well on the draws and controlled most of the ground balls.

Dock (2-1) continues to show progress as a second-year program. The Pioneers were led by Abby Mellinger’s three goals, with Kenzie Derstine adding a pair and Tess Bergey chipping in with one.

“We’re still young and learning. We were able to run some plays. We’re still young and developing but we definitely took away some positives from this game,” said Pioneers coach Michelle Waldspurger. “It was good to play (LC). It was a great learning experience today.”

Both squads now head to league play.

Dock hosts Delco Christian Thursday night at 7 in a Bicentennial Athletic League clash and LC heads to Philadelphia Catholic League rival Bonner-Prendergast on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
