McNeal’s pair of fours helps defending PIAA champion Garnet Valley cruise in opener

Garnet Valley’s quest for a third straight PIAA girls lacrosse championship began in earnest Thursday. Just in case anyone had forgotten how good the Jaguars are, Hatboro-Horsham found out the hard way.

Kam McNeal had four goals and four assists to lead GV to a 23-6 victory at Moe DeFrank Stadium.

Cam Faith added three goals and four assists, while All-Delco Emily Mathewson registered four goals and two assists for the Jags, who led at halftime, 15-4.

Laynie Kennedy notched two goals and a pair of assists, and Maddie O’Brien, Madi McKee and Riley Delaney each tallied twice in the win.

In other nonleague action:

Springfield 14, Parkland 2 >> Bridget Whitaker shined for the Cougars on the first day of the 2016 season. The junior midfielder posted game highs in goals (six), assists (two), draw controls (six) and ground balls (four).

Whitaker had plenty of help from her friends, too. Bailey O’Brien recorded a hat trick and Olivia Little chipped in with two goals for the Cougars.

Maggie O’Connell (goal) played a stellar all-around game at midfield for Springfield.

Interboro 20, Norristown 2 >> Hailey Fisher powered the Bucs to a successful first showing with her three goals and three assists. Marissa Hews and Karleigh Kennedy shared high scoring honors with four goals apiece, and Madison Hengey contributed with two goals and four assists. Ro Murphy had a goal and two assists for the Bucs, who received a solid outing in net by Moriah Marr (six saves).

Notre Dame 16, Villa Maria 5 >> Caroline Allen filled up the stat sheet with three goals, three assists, five draw controls and three ground balls for the Irish. Mackenzie Irvine tallied thrice, and Alyssa Giacomin and Kelly Coyle (three assists) racked up two goals apiece. Goalie Jackie Lanzalotto made six saves.

Agnes Irwin 18, C.B. West 7 >> The Owls (2-0) broke things open with a run of eight straight goals in the first half. All-Delco Laura Pansini had an incredible 10-point performance (five goals, five assists).

Lila Barker totaled four goals and three assists, and Emily Fryer excelled in the midfield (seven draw controls) for AIS. Maria Pansini, Emma Macaione (three caused turnovers) and Brynn Smith highlighted the Owls’ potent defensive effort.

Episcopal Academy 17, Downingtown East 6 >> Corinne Zanolli reached the 100-goal plateau as the Churchwomen (2-0) spoiled the Cougars’ home opener.

Zanolli topped all players with five goals. Katie Crager and Julia Hondros (seven draw controls) each had four goals in the win, and Taylor Lucey added two tallies and two assists for EA.
