Haverford has a chance to make some noise

UPPER DARBY — The Central League is well-represented in the District One girls lacrosse tournament, which gets under way Tuesday.

Tenth-seeded Haverford is one team from the Central League, which has long been the dominated girls lacrosse conference in the state, performing the role of darkhorse.

Last spring, the Fords defeated Souderton in the opening round before a season-ending loss to Harriton.

Several key players from that 2014 team — seniors Jess Lyons and Mairead Janzer, and junior Tess Horan, to name a few — look to redeem themselves in 2015. Haverford has the pieces to make a deep run.

“I think we have really good leadership on the team and, really, I think every grade is really stepping up this year,’ said Horan after a game in April. Horan is an All-Delco field hockey player and committed to play the sport at Drexel University.

“We think we have the players to do a lot of good things.’

Janzer, who has been the team’s top attacker since her sophomore year, is one of the leading goal scorers in Delaware County.

“The team has meshed really well this year, because we’ve gotten so used to playing with each other,’ said Janzer, an All-Delco last spring.

The Fords enter the District One girls lacrosse tournament looking to continue what has been a solid season in the Central League, a conference that produced the top three seeds in Conestoga, Radnor and Harriton.
