Tulpehocken looking to continue the resurgence

The Tulpehocken High School girls’ basketball team struggled through several two-win Berks League seasons, just hoping they compete well in any particular game. That all changed in the 2012-13 season when they went 5-5 in the league.

Last year the Lady Trojans went 7-3, made the Berks League playoffs and qualified for the district playoffs. The question is, can the team continue their resurgence this year. They will have to do it with three of the team’s five top scorer lost to graduation. But they do had their top scorer in Taylor Boyer back for her senior season, and several other players with plenty of varsity experience.

“It should be a very competitive one in our division,’ said Tulpehocken head coach William Moyer. “There are four teams that have returning starters and youth that can step in and do the job. If things go our way, we should be in that mix.’

Much will be expected from Taylor Boyer, now that her sister, Brooke, has graduated. Tayler led the team in scoring and rebounding last year. She averaged 10.4 points a game last year, and may have to improve on that if the Trojans are to get back to the league playoffs.

She will have help. Darian Gordon is also a good rebounder and will be expected to contribute heavily to the offense. She was third on the team last year with 133 points, 6.3 points per game.

Audrey Jonas will by a starting guard and Tori Stump, who gave the team a spark off the bench last year, but will break into the starting line-up this year. She will have to do what she did in 12 minutes last year, and continue to play like that with twice the playing time this year.

“We want to continue to get better and be more consistent this season,’ said Moyer. With that, they may not only make the playoffs, but win a playoff game.

The key is to stay healthy. If they get a key player out of the line-up due to injury, it will be a much tougher road for the Trojans. Of course, the same could be said for many other teams in the Berks League.
