Martino erupts for 21 points to power Penncrest

Penncrest didn’t have a win in the Central League entering Thursday’s away game against Radnor. The Lions have one now, and they can thank their senior captain, Sam Martino.

Martino outscored Radnor by her lonesome, finishing with 21 points in Penncrest’s 39-20 rout of Radnor, arguably the biggest upset in the Delco hoops season.

Grace Harding tossed in six points for the Lions (3-11, 1-8), who controlled the second half, 25-9. Radnor led by one after the first quarter, but struggled for points the rest of the way. Top forward Kristin Hamill was limited to two points and sharpshooting guard Lauren Pacifico had just one field goal for three points. Nicole Massimino led Radnor with five points.

Strath Haven 45, Marple Newtown 39: The Panthers overcame a sluggish start, down 16-6 after one quarter, but eventually took advantage of the Tigers’ shooting woes (3-of-29) in the second half.

Two days after scoring 39 points in a four-overtime victory over Haverford, junior guard Katie Fisher netted a team-high 18 points to pace the Panthers (12-2), who used a 16-3 run in the third quarter to gain control from the Tigers.

Rylee Power scored 11 of her 17 points from the free-throw line, while Carley Hamilton had 11 of her 13 points in opening half, in the loss for the Tigers. Strath Haven and Marple Newtown combined to 22-of-40 from the foul line.

Garnet Valley 75, Ridley 47: The Jags (13-1, 9-0) blew the game open in the third quarter when they outscored the visiting Green Raiders, 17-4.

Macy Goldbach paced GV with 16 points, while Sam Tomasetti had a solid all-around game with eight rebounds, six steals and four assists. Maddie Ireland finished with 13 points and her big sister Jordan added 11.

Haley Thompson (11 points), Jalessa Rodriguez (10) and Kristin Saraceni (10) reached double figures in scoring for the Green Raiders (6-8).

Haverford 40, Conestoga 36: Ashley Murphy saved the Fords from a (potentially) tough loss.

Murphy came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points as the Fords (12-2) notched a key win over the Pioneers. She was the answer to Conestoga’s triangle-and-two defense, which limited top scorers Mollie Reynolds and Rosie O’Halloran to a combined 13 points.

Haverford went home victorious despite a 15-of-31 performance from the free-throw line.

Harriton 46, Springfield 38: Amanda Hopkins guided the Cougars (1-11) with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Sam Tamaccio and Maggie O’Connell finished with eight points apiece.

In Del Val League:

Penn Wood 65, Chichester 30: The visiting Patriots (7-5) completely dominated the second half, outscoring the Eagles 38-9, including a 31-1 run in the third quarter.

Leading the way was Dahnye Redd, who registered a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Simone Walker scored 17 points and grabbed nine boards, while Joy Morton (five rebounds, four assists) and Gabrielle Hairston (three assists, four steals) both had solid floor games.

Maddie Thornton and Lauren Carrafa paced Chi with 12 points apiece.

In the Catholic League:

Archbishop Carroll 63, Little Flower 28: The streaking Patriots (10-4, 6-0) won their sixth straight games thanks in part to Lexi Kucia, Julia Gantz and Lexi Stover, all of whom netted 10 points. Ann McKnight put forth a solid all-around effort with nine points, four steals and four assists.

Cardinal O’Hara 67, West Catholic 18: Hannah Nihill scored 13 points and Mary Sheehan finished with 10 as the Lions (12-1, 5-1) cruised. Mackenzie Gardler added eight points in the win.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Sun Valley 60, Octorara 35: Kate Lannon went off for 24 points and 17 rebounds as the Vanguards scored 21 first-quarter points and never looked back.

Madison Corrento provided 15 points, including eight in the opening period. Brooke Duncan dished out eight assists.

In the Bicentennial League:

Phil-Mont Christian 63, Delco Christian 53: Siani McNeil poured in a season-high 21 points, but the visiting Knights (7-6, 5-4) had trouble containing Phil-Mont’s inside presence.

Paige Thompson added 10 points and Shirley Piotrowski chipped in with eight for DC, which has dropped four its last five decisions.

In the Catholic Academies League:

Gwynedd Mercy 61, Sacred Heart 23: Gwynedd Mercy hit eight field goals and jumped on the visiting Lions (5-9, 0-4) right away. Madison Schnieder netted a team-high five points in the loss for Sacred Heart.
