Furey’s monster game paces Episcopal Academy
Elodie Furey did just about everything as Episcopal Academy rolled over Pope John Paul II, 56-34, in the Hoops for Hope Classic at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Furey scored 19 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and blocked two shots. She did most of her offensive damage in the third quarter with nine points to help the Churchwomen (8-5) open up a commanding 38-13 halftime lead. EA put the game away with 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Seanna McNamara backed Furey with 12 points.
In other action at USP:
Gwynedd-Mercy 48, Archbishop Carroll 21 >> The Monarchs were too much for the Patriots right from the start. Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Monarchs held the Patriots to single digits in every quarter.
Erica DeCandilo paced Gwynedd Mercy with a game-high 16 points. Maggie Pina led Carroll with eight points.
Friends Central 48, Notre Dame 36 >> Division I recruits Mikayla Vaughn and Iyanna McCurdy paved the way for the Phoenix.
Vaughn, a 6-3 junior who is receiving interest from Notre Dame, Maryland, Florida State and Duke, among others, scored 18 points and was named her team’s player of the game. McCurdy, a 5-9 senior guard who has signed with Southeast Missouri State, added 14 points.
Caitlin Clark scored 10 points to earn player of the game honors for Notre Dame (11-3). Freshman Amanda McGurk led the Irish with 12 points. She also had eight rebounds and five assists.
Mount St. Joseph 35, Bonner & Prendergast 19 >> A poor shooting performance doomed the Pandas. The game was tied, 6-6, after the first quarter, but Bonner & Prendergast made just three field goals the rest of the game.
Nyah Garrison scored six points to lead the Pandas. Princess Clemons added five points. Caroline Manfre pulled down 11 rebounds.
In the Bluestar Showcase at Cabrini:
Seton Keough 56, Agnes Irwin 31 >> The Gators used a suffocating defense to pull away from the Owls. Seton Keough held Agnes Irwin to 18 points in the first three quarters.
Alex Blomstrom led AIS with seven points. Katie Anderson chipped in with five points.
