The bright lights Shine on CB East in win over Souderton

BUCKINGHAM >> In a battle of unbeatens, Central Bucks East put forth a performance worthy of its first home game under the Friday night lights in 52 years.

“We got the result we wanted and it means the world to everyone,” said a smiling Ethan Shine.

Shine rumbled for 268 yards and four touchdowns, powering the Patriots to a 30-13 victory over Souderton in a Suburban One League non-conference clash.

“We prepared well all week. We knew this game was gonna be different,” Shine said. “So I feel like we prepared well and we prepared to win.”

The victory raised East’s unbeaten record to 3-0, with a game at Central Bucks South coming up next on Friday. Souderton is now 2-1 on the season and hosts Council Rock North on Friday.

“We just gotta prepare mentally and physically for next week’s game,” said Big Red quarterback Jared Zimmerman, who threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Purvy.

Shine carried the ball 32 times for East, scoring on TD runs of two, 10, 31 and four yards. His longest gain of the night – 76 yards – set up his first score.

Said quarterback Pat Keller: “Last year, you would give it to him, and he would thump-thump-thump. This year, he’s even better. He’s lighter on his feet, he’s making people miss and he’s running over them. You can’t stop him – it’s crazy. I wouldn’t wanna be in front of him, that’s for sure.”

Night games are now a reality at East.

And to commemorate this one, the Patriots held their annual “Greene Out,” as fans were decked out in green to honor and raise money for the Greene Team Foundation. The charity was set up in Larry Greene’s name after the longtime Patriots football coach died of bone marrow cancer in 2013.

The Pats – the coaching staff also decked out in green – made this a night to remember.

Shine’s big burst in the second quarter set up his first score, which broke a 3-3 tie.

Zimmerman moved Big Red into field-goal range just before the half, with Ty Quintois booting a 38-yarder to bring the visitors within 9-6.

In the third quarter, East’s defense forced a punt and the Patriot offense was soon on the move.

Eight runs by Shine and timely passing by Keller produced another score – this one a 10-yard surge by Shine that increased the Patriot lead to 16-6.

“That’s all on my offensive line right there,” Shine said of his quartet of trips to the end zone. “Huge guys pushing dudes, wherever they want to push them…Liam Powers, Chris Poulson, Joe Collins, Connor Harris, The Sean Connor…If that offensive line isn’t there, I’m not doing anything.”

Big Red then put together a sustained drive that reached the doorstep of East’s end zone.

But on 4th-and-2 at the nine, Zimmerman was stopped by a sprinting Luke Wilson, turning the ball back over to East.

A 31-yard touchdown run by Shine broke the game open at 23-6 early in the fourth.

Zimmerman’s touchdown throw to Purvy (101 yards rushing and receiving) brought Big Red within 23-13 with six minutes to go. But one more stop by East – keyed by a sack by Jake Maggio – and a four-yard score by Shine locked up the victory for the Patriots.

“We have to move onto next week. It’s all about the next one, keep on getting better and keep on being successful,” said Shine.
