Thornbury >> Great Valley was determined to start the season 3-0 when they traveled to Glen Mills on Friday night. With the help of 230 yards on the ground and 157 yards through the air, the Patriots remained unbeaten, defeating the Bulls 28-13 in the nonleague contest.
The start of the game proved to be a defensive battle with zero points being scored in the opening quarter. Great Valley (3-0) moved the ball well but was held scoreless due to two key turnovers. The Patriots reaped the benefits of eight Glen Mills penalties that accounted for 70 yards.
The first touchdown of the night came in the second quarter when Robert Geiss pitched the ball to Mark DeRobertis who then threw a 31-yard strike to wide receiver Riggsby Lane. However the Bulls (1-2) answered right away. Running back Quadir Gibson, who rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns, darted up the middle for a 57-yard touchdown to tie the game at 6-6.
It was then Great Valley’s turn to answer and they did. Starting on their own 37-yard line, the Patriots went 63 yards, ending in a DeRobertis four-yard touchdown run.
The third quarter was much like the first, no scoring as both offenses traded three-and-outs for 12 minutes.
The rhythum of the game shifted once again in the final frame. On the first play of the quarter, Geiss dropped back and delivered a strike to Ryan Hubley for a 56-yard TD to put the Patriots up, 20-6. Glen Mills could have rolled over right there, but they didn’t. Instead they responded with a Gibson 52-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 20-13.
In the end, Great Valley proved to be too much as their offense drove the ball 54 yards ending in another DeRobertis touchdown to seal the win for the Patriots 28-13.
“Were a very resilient team we keep battling,” Great Valley’s coach Dan Ellis said. “We keep fighting, we’re young and we make mistakes but we don’t let the mistakes impact us.”
