Council Rock South crushes Truman behind Patterson’s five scores

NEWTOWN – The stakes were clear for the Council Rock South High School football team with the score tied after two quarters against Harry S Truman Friday night at Walt Snyder Stadium.

Either get its act together or Rock South would run the risk of dropping to 1-3 and virtually out of the playoff picture before the season had even reached its midway point.

Well, whatever Vince Bedesem said to his team at halftime, it got the message. As in a whopping 35 unanswered second-half points en route to a 50-15 mercy-rule victory over Truman in which standout running back Brendan Patterson scored five touchdowns.

With the win, Rock South improved to 2-2 after tough losses to Suburban One National powers Pennsbury and Neshaminy and got the Suburban One Continental League portion of its season off and rolling.

Truman came into this game minus two of its big weapons in injured quarterback Mark Lopez-Shefcyk and running back Corey McCloud, but for a while, it didn’t seem to matter.

After Rock South scored right away on a 26-yard pass from Shaun Stackhouse to Patterson, Truman came right back with a 65-yard drive capped by a 12-yard run by Matt Olsen. Even better for the Tigers, they then took a 15-7 lead early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Olsen and a successful two-point conversion.

It was at this point where Rock South started elevating its game as it tied the score on a 20-yard burst by Patterson up the middle and a somewhat bizarre two-point conversion in which it fumbled the ball and Shawn Mackin recovered the ball in the end zone.

It looked like anyone’s game with the score tied at 15-all at the half, but then things completely fell apart for Truman (2-2).

It started with the Tigers failing to cover the second half kickoff and Rock South recovering on the Truman 36. Three plays later, Patterson was in the end zone again on a 7-yard run.

Before Truman could recover, Rock South struck again on an 82-yard touchdown bolt down the left sideline by Kyle Hickey, who led all rushers with 113 yards on five carries.

From there, Truman got a blocked punt by Alex Benner and a fourth touchdown from Patterson on a 6-yard run. Set up by a fumble, Rock South upped its lead to 43-15 late in the third quarter on yet another 6-yard Patterson touchdown run.

Coming off a monster game against Neshaminy in which he ran for over 200 yards, Patterson had just 94 last evening on 11 carries. Of course, he probably would have had a lot more yards if his team hadn’t so often had a short field to work with and a lot more carries if he hadn’t kept racing into the end zone.

A veteran squad with a host of returning starters, this Rock South team is capable of doing a lot of damage. It took until the second half last evening, but in the end, they certainly put a beating on Truman.
