Boon’s three TD’s power Unionville past Octorara

EAST MARLBOROUGH – Brandon Boon never guessed he would have a double-digit touchdown season when Unionville football kicked off in August.

Unionville head coach Pat Clark, on the other hand, didn’t seem surprised. Not with what Boon brings to the Indians’ offense each week.

“Brandon is so elusive and he’s fast,’ Clark said. “He bought into the fact that he could play some wideout. With him there, he’s another vertical threat to our offense along with his running ability.’

Boon put all of his talents on display Friday night with 135 total yards (46 rushing, 89 receiving) and three touchdowns as Unionville rushed for 260 yards in a 49-6 win over Octorara in a Ches-Mont American Division clash.

The Indians (3-0 league, 5-2 overall) won their second straight game and remained in a tie for first in the division with West Chester Rustin, a 42-6 winner over Sun Valley. Octorara (2-2 league, 4-3 overall) had its two-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Boon’s three touchdowns on the night gave him a team-leading 10 on the season. He’s the sixth player in the Ches-Mont to reach double-digit touchdowns for the year.

“I never thought I’d get (10 touchdowns) this year,’ Boon said. “I’m so blessed.’

Boon scored his first touchdown for Unionville’s first score of the night. On a 3rd-and-20, Indians’ quarterback Alex Pechin hit Boon on a deep post down the middle of the field for 65 yards to give Unionville a 7-0 lead with 6:35 left in the first quarter.

Boon’s second score came after Octorara fumbled on a kickoff return following a 39-yard touchdown run by Austin Hoffman-Reardon to make it 14-0.

On Unionville’s first play following the fumble, Pechin hit Boon on a fly pattern for a 16-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 early in the second quarter.

With the Indians defense forcing two Octorara fumbles in the first half, the Braves’ rushing attack was squandered due to the three score deficit.

In came the arm of Alex Gooden, who converted a 29-yard pass to set up a four yard touchdown run by Corey Cooper which capped a 10-play drive and cut Unionville’s lead to 21-6 with 1:10 left in the second quarter.

But Tyler Marmo decided to put the game away on the ensuing kickoff. Marmo took the kick 71 yards to the end zone as the Indians led 28-6 heading into the half.

Boon scored his third and final touchdown of the night on a 13-yard run to give Unionville a 35-6 lead late in the third quarter. The Indians put the mercy rule into effect on a one yard run by Hoffman-Reardon on their next series.

Unionville held Gooden and Cooper, who game into the game averaging 225 rushing yards between them, to 101 yards on the night.

“Octorara’s offense goes between those two guys (Gooden and Cooper),’ Clark said. “They’re great football players. We’re just fortunate enough to have a little more depth than they have and got some matchups early and points on the board. Making Octorara play from behind was important.’

The Indians defense held Octorara to 197 yards. Unionville gained 357 yards in the contest.

Octorara hosts Kennett Friday as the Braves will attempt to tie the program record with its 5th win this season.

Unionville travels to West Chester Rustin, where the American Division championship could be determined.

“They’re a great team,’ Clark said. “Rustin’s a great football program. It’s kind of been them and us in this division. Next week will go a long way to deciding this (division). There’s a lot of football to be played.’
