Mercury roundup (Sept. 8): ‘Hat trick hero’ Schuler lifts Pope John Paul II girls soccer over Methacton

Pope John Paul II 3, Methacton 2

Hat-trick hero Cam Schuler scored three goals – all in the second half – to catapult Pope John Paul II to a comeback victory over Methacton in a PAC crossover contest Friday.

Methacton had a 2-0 lead at halftime on goals from senior Mia Chan in the 10th minute, assisted by senior Aubrey Beaugard, and then Beaugard scored an “olympico”, unassisted directly from a corner kick, in the 25th minute.

But PJP came to life with two Schuler goals early in the second half, both assisted by Brooke Pappa. Schuler scored the winner with 20 minutes to play.

Freshman Anna Qawasmy made nine saves for Methacton, while PJP keeper Kyanni Escudero made six.

Spring-Ford 2, Phoenixville 0

Hannah Dennison and Molly Kennedy handled the scoring and Olivia Nield handled the four saves required of her as Spring-Ford stopped Phoenixville in a PAC cross-division matchup. Mackenzie Hanley had an assist.

Boyertown 3, Upper Merion 1

Harper Glennon figured on all three goals and Boyertown were winners in a game halted at halftime due to thunderstorms. Glennon scored two and assisted on the Bears’ third, scored by Alina Friz. Autumn Levengood also had an assist. Upper Merion’s Catherine Pratt scored the Vikings’ goal.

FIELD HOCKEY

Boyertown 2, Perkiomen Valley 1

Boyertown overcame a two-hour lightning delay and a tight battle with the Vikings to prevail in a PAC Liberty matchup.

PV got on the board first with two minutes left in the third quarter but the Bears responded when Maya Brunner scored on a rebound from a Peyton Shellaway shot with six minutes to play. Emily Ulrich scored the game-winner with two minutes to play.

Spring-Ford 4, Owen J. Roberts 2

Marissa Cagliola made the difference in the second half by scoring Spring-Ford third and fourth goals to lead the Rams past the Wildcats in PAC Liberty play.
OJR got goals from Evie Wolters and Larissa Schell (Maddie Tillou assist) for a 2-1 halftime lead.

But Spring-Ford, which got a goal from Maddie Friend in the first quarter, controlled the second half, tying the game on a Nina Scott goal. Norah Kirsch had nine saves for SF. OJR’s Jaz Campbell had 16 stops.

Methacton 7, Norristown 0

Calie FIsher scored three goals and Methacton cruised in an abbreviated PAC Liberty win that ended in the third quarter due to thunderstorms.

Contributing on multiple goals were Lily DeWan (goal, three assists), Elena Weychert (goal, assist), Carmela Maro (goal, assist) while Lea DeWan had a goal and Renee Blake and Lizzy Mun each had an assist.

Phoenixville 1, Pope John Paul II 0

Maggie Daly struck first for Phoenixville and sophomore goalkeeper Corinne Bulland the Phoenixville defense kept PJP off the board for the remainder of the game. Ava Parkinson made eight saves for PJP.

The Phantoms won in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20. Phoenixville game leaders were Kristen Brown (5 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs), Kailey Hudy (2 aces, 15 assists, 5 digs), Gianna Buce (5 Kills, 4 Digs) and Zoe Monson (5 digs).
