Ianarelli helps Plymouth Whitemarsh rally past Springfield-Montco

SPRINGFIELD >> Springfield boys lacrosse head coach Hank Resch couldn’t explain it.

Nor did he want to.

All he knew was that his Spartans played one half of Senior Night, and forgot about the second.

In the second half, foe Plymouth Whitemarsh overcame a three-goal deficit to post a 7-3 victory that may or may not have an effect on the Spartans’ seeding in the upcoming District One Class AA playoff field.

“I don’t think it will be bad” Resch said. “(PW) is a Triple-A team so I don’t think it will hurt us too badly.

“But I guess we’ll know pretty soon.”

The Spartans did everything a team is supposed to do on Senior Night — for one half, at least.

Springfield played most of the game in the PW end got goals from Justin Smith, Cam Callards and Paul Richardson and took a 3-0 lead into the break.

But the Colonials, whose playoff chances are virtually nil, refused to end their season on the losing end of the score.

They got a goal from Brendan Sullivan 1:24 into the second half, and then did nothing but win draw after draw, spend long periods of time in the Spartans end of the field and scored seven unanswered goals.

“We’re really a depleted team,”said PW head coach Bryan Gregg. “We have a lot of guys out of the lineup and playing out of position.

“But tonight we decided we weren’t going to end our season with a loss.”

The barrage continued, as Mike Ianarelli collected a second-half hat trick and the remainder of the Colonials chipped in.

“We started making mistakes,” Resch said, “and we just couldn’t stop.

“We have kind of a mental block when we play teams like PW, Upper Dublin and Wissahickon.  We always seem to have trouble with them.”

Resch is convinced the trouble won’t continue once the Spartans know where they’ll be opening district play.

“I think we’ll be fine,” he said. “I can’t fault our effort today. We just made too many mistakes.”
