Mercury Boys Basketball Roundup: Norristown takes PAC Liberty title
The three-way tie atop the Pioneer Athletic Conference Liberty Division was settled Friday night.
Norristown claimed the Liberty Division championship for the second straight year after a 68-48 victory over Boyertown to cap an 8-2 division run and 14-2 PAC campaign.
Methacton finished level at 8-2 after its 61-41 win over Owen J. Roberts. Erik Timko led the way with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Jeff Woodward added 20 points in the win over OJR. The Warriors were forced to settle for the No. 3 seed in the PAC Final Six, slotting in behind division champions Norristown and Pope John Paul II.
Perkiomen Valley saw itself taken out of any tie-breaking scenarios after rival Spring-Ford hammered PV 63-33 Friday night. The Rams (5-5, 11-5, 15-7) emphatically capped their league season with four players in double figures: Noah Baker (17), Tyler Scilingo (15), Ryan Hagan (12) and Robert Bobeck (11). Spring-Ford led by 19 at haltime. PV was led by Tyler Strechay’s 17 points.
The win kept S-F at No. 6 though, and set up a Wednesday quarterfinal with Methacton that is a rematch of last year’s championship. The other quarterfinal will see No. 5 seed Perkiomen Valley take on Frontier runner-up Pottsgrove, the No. 4 seed. The tournament will be held at Spring-Ford with the final set for Tuesday, Feb. 12.
Pottstown 76, Upper Perkiomen 63 >> The Trojans capped their PAC campaign with a win over Upper Perk, but missed the PAC Final Six via tiebreaker (head-to-head) to crosstown rival Pottsgrove.
Against UP, Floyd Dashiell scored 22 and Donovan Towson added 12 as Pottstown improved to 6-4 PAC Frontier, 8-8 PAC, 10-11 overall. Pottstown entered the day ranked No. 13 in the District 1 Class 5A, which fields a 16-team district tournament.
Riley Decker led the Tribe with 21 points and Jake Plessl added 12.
