Reporter/Times Herald Baseball Roundup (May 12): Ehly’s walk-off HR in 11th lifts Abington over Hatboro-Horsham
Abington 9, Hatboro-Horsham 6 (9) >> Anthony Ehly gave Abington a dramatic extra-innings victory, hitting a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th in Wednesday’s SOL Liberty Division contest.
Ehly finished 3-for-6 with four RBIs and two run scored while also earning the win on the mound, allowing five hits over five innings, walking four and striking out four.
Hatboro-Horsham grabbed a 6-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth but Abington scored a run in the bottom of the frame then pulled even with three in the fifth.
The contest stayed knotted at six until the Ghosts’ half of the 11th. Colin Hamsher led off with a walk while Luke Sydlowski singled to put two on with no outs. After a fly out, Ehly ending things with his three-run shot to left.
Henry Tyler was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for the Ghosts, who have won two straight and nine of their last 10. Jameson Giannattasio went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, Cody Frazier had two RBIs while Hamsher drew four walks.
Cole Fisher finished 4-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs for the Hatters, which had their seven-game win streak snapped. Jake Elwell was 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and a run, Ryan Toporowski and Will Bruner both were 2-for-6 with Noah Gremo walked twice and scored two runs.
After an Ehly RBI single in the bottom of the first, HH took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second as Elwell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and on the next at-bat Fisher hit a two-RBI single.
Frazier’s RBI sac fly had the Ghosts within 3-2 in the bottom of the second. The Hatters added another turns in top of the fourth – Elwell hitting an RBI single then scoring on an error while a Nick Katherine RBI sac fly made it 6-2.
Giannattasio’s RBI double in the bottom of the inning had Abington within three. The Ghosts scored their first two runs in the fifth on singles from Tyler and Frazier then tied the game after Hamsher’s bases-loaded walk.
Upper Dublin 8, Plymouth Whitemarsh 1 >> Ethan Madnick and Tyler Lizell both collected three RBIs as Upper Dublin extended its win streak to 11, taking a 5-0 lead with four runs in the top of the third and going on to beat Plymouth Whitemarsh in the SOL Liberty matchup.
Madnick went 2-for-3 with a run scored, Lizell was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Griffin Johnson pitched a complete game, allowing one run – unearned – on five hits, two walks and struck out one for the Cardinals (11-7, 3-5 division).
UD’s Leo Soriano was 2-for-3 with a double with Kyle Rizzo and Nick Lombardo each scoring twice.
PW has lost its last two games since starting the season 15-0. The Colonials (15-2, 6-2) can clinch the outright SOL Liberty title at home against Abington 4 p.m. Friday.
Madnick put the Cards up 1-0 with his RBI single in the first. Lizell’s two-RBI double in the fourth made it 3-0 with Upper Dublin adding two more in the frame as Karan Acharya hit an RBI single then scored on a wild pitch.
PW plated its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Lucas Gilbert came home after an error on Dom DiCiurcio’s grounder. UD tacked on three more runs with two outs in the sixth on Madnick’s bases-loaded, two-RBI single and a Lizell RBI single.
La Salle 2, Bonner & Prendergast 1 >> Eric Shandler plated both of La Salle’s runs with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third as the Explorers edged Bonner & Prendergast to stay undefeated in the Philadelphia Catholic League.
Nick Astolfi led off the La Salle (17-2, 12-0 PCL) half of the third with a walk with his courtesy runner Cullen Remus going to third on Jephson Hadson-Taylor’s single – Hadson-Taylor advancing to second on the throw. Two batters later, Shandler made it 2-0 with his one-out single.
Bonner & Prendergast scored its lone run in the fifth on Michael Anderson’ RBI sacrifice fly.
La Salle starting pitcher Kevin Kell threw four shutout innings as he earned the win. Kell gave up one hit, walked four and struck out four. Cole Kochanowicz pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save.
Central Bucks West 4, Pennridge 2 >> Andrew Kohl’s two-run home run capped Central Bucks West’s three-run bottom of the third, Connor Dobos pitched six solid innings and the Bucks held off Pennridge to pick up an SOL Colonial victory.
Kevin Bukowski was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored for the Bucks (7-9, 5-3), who won their second straight. Dobos allowed two runs – both earned – on two hits, walked three and struck out three. Julio Ermigiotti earned the save, striking out two in pitching a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.
Joey Calabretti and Carson Wells each had an RBI while Bobby Croyle walked three times and scored a run for Pennridge (4-13, 1-7) which plated both of its runs in the top of the fourth to get within 3-2.
Bukowski, however, gave CB West a two-run cushion in the sixth with his RBI double to left.
In the bottom of the third, Boyle’s RBI single gave the Bucks a 1-0 lead while on the next at-bat Kohl increased it 3-0 with his two-run homer to left.
Lansdale Catholic 17, Bishop McDevitt 1 (5) >> Chris Duffy was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Michael Orr finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice as Lansdale Catholic cruised to a five-inning PCL victory.
Andrew Horan was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run, Andrew Fredrickson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Matt Costello went 2-for-2 for the Crusaders, who led 8-1 after four frame then plated nine in the top of the fifth.
Ryan Martinez had two RBIs and three runs scored, Ethan Mellinger scored twice while Jack Ferko was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored.
Dock Mennonite 17, Collegium Charter 3 (6) >> Garrett Nyce led off the top of the second with a home run, added an RBI double in the fourth and finished 5-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored as Dock Mennonite rolled to a six-inning win.
Devon Ross went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored while Sam Laux was 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and scored three times for the Pioneers.
Carter Jagiela had two RBIs, two walks and three runs scored. Zach Frederick and Zach Neff both scored twice as Neff went 2-for-4 and Frederick was 2-for-5.
After Dock plated three runs in the top of the second, Collegium cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers answered with a run in the third then three more in the fourth to go up 7-2. A four-spot in the fifth had put Dock ahead 11-2 with the visitors adding another six runs in the sixth.
