Delco Roundup: Taylor whiffs 24 as Haverford clinches at least a share of Central League title
Haverford’s Emma Taylor and Garnet Valley’s Anna Sidlowski put on quite the pitching exhibition Monday afternoon.
In the end, Taylor was just a tad bit better and the Fords wrapped up a share of the Central League softball championship for the third year in a row.
Taylor, the 2021 Daily Times Player of the Year, whiffed a career-high 24 batters as the Fords outlasted Garnet Valley in 12 innings, 2-1, to remain undefeated and wrap up at least a share of the league title.
Taylor struck out everyone in the lineup at least once, fanned the side four times, surrendered six hits walked three and the only run she allowed was unearned. She also pitched out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.
Sidlowski was just as brilliant. She struck out 22, scattered 10 hits and walked five.
It was a scoreless game until top of the 12th inning when Taylor ripped an RBI single. Claudia Stuck’s bunt and an error chased home Madie Culbertson with the winning run. Kylie Ingraam and Kerri McCallum both ripped doubles for the Fords.
Garnet Valley cut the deficit in half on a single by Zoey Rogers but Taylor recorded her third strikeout of the inning to end the contest. Rogers finished 4-for-6 with three singles and a double.
Springfield 12, Marple Newtown 3 >> Lanie Morris (3-for-4) and Ryleigh Frye (2-for-3) knocked in three runs each and scored once to pace the Cougars. Frye ripped a double and home run, while Ava Craddoc had two doubles while going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Emily Bower went 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Tigers.
Ridley 16, Upper Darby 0 >> Gemma Taggart took over for Karlie Cecchini and fanned five in the final three innings to get the win. Cecchini whiffed three in her one inning of work.
Dakota Marshall and Paige McLaughlin both had a double, homer and three RBIs to pace the offense. Haley McMenanin and Gabby DeLuca pitched in with two hits each.
Strath Haven 11, Radnor 1 >> Ella Liberi went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cassidy DiRemigio knocked in two runs and Cate Kozub added two hits. Morgan Noon scattered five hits and struck out four to get the win.
In the Ches-Mont League:
Sun Valley 10, Kennett 0 >> All-Delco Brianna Lawson paced the offense for the Vanguards.
Lawson laced three hits including a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Ally Sheppard reached base four times and Devin Warner and Sarah Power contributed two hits each. Jordyn Skarren tossed a one-hitter to get the win.
Boys Lacrosse
Alex Chambers dominated the face-off circle and Charlie and Brian Box combined for 11 goals and four assists as Marple Newtown rolled over Coatesville, 15-4, in nonleague action.
Chambers was 18-for-23 on face-offs. Charlie Box scored seven times and handed out one assist. Brian Box added four goals and three assists. Joey Yukenevitch pitched in with three goals and three assists. Damien Bogsch haded out four assists. Goalies Jack Welsh and Marco D’Alcandro made 13 and three saves, respectively.
Girls Lacrosse
Abigail Blemings collected six goals, including the 100th of her career, to lift Bonner-Prendergast to a 15-13 Catholic League victory over Lansdale Catholic.
Blemings also posted five assists, seven draw controls and two ground balls. Leila George added five goals, one assist, five draw controls and four ground balls. Maia Losasso pitched in with three goals and three caused turnovers.
Boys Tennis
Harriton’s Newman Yielding and Nathaniel Ghez pulled out a three-set victory at first doubles to lift Harriton over Garnet Valley, 3-2, in the District 1 Class 3A fifth-place game. Yielding and Chez defeated Garnet Valley’s Braden Rogers and Shallesh Bolduc, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Ashrith Settivari and Shiven Patel won in straight sets and second and third singles for the Jaguars.
Central League Doubles >> Radnor’s Graham Bernabeo and J.P. Pruett, and Srihari Raman and Rithik Brahma and Shiven Patel and Shallesh Bolduc of Garnet Valley all earned a spot in the District 1 Class 3A doubles tournament.
Bernabeo and Pruett finished fifth in the Central League tournament over the weekend, while Raman and Brahma placed sixth. The top six teams advance to District 1 tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the Springfield YMCA.
Conestoga’s Rohan Rao and Aaron Sun defeated Charlie Bittinger and Scotty Stuart of Lower Merion in the championship match. Stoyan Angelov and Adam Lee from Lower Merion took third by forfeit and Basil Lininiecki and Vincent Yao from Conestoga placed fourth.
The top six teams qualify for the district tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday.
