Reporter/Times Herald Softball Roundup (May 10): Wilmot homers in North Penn’s win over Pennridge
North Penn 11, Pennridge 0 (5) >> Bri Wilmot hit a three-run home run while Mady Volpe struck out 13 to earn a five-inning no-hitter in Monday’s SOL Colonial contest
Wilmot hit her seventh homer of 2021 in the bottom of the first, the sophomore’s three-run shot putting NP up 4-0. The Knights (15-1, 7-0 SOL Colonial) scored their last seven runs in the third and claimed their ninth straight win, the last seven by shutout.
Wilmot finished 2-for-2 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored while Volpe was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Carley DiGiuseppe had a double and two RBIs with Sarah Sabocsik, Annabelle Smink and Jackie Diaz all scoring twice.
For Pennridge (5-11, 2-4), the loss ended a two-game win streak.
In the bottom of the first, Sabocsik and Smink drew one-out walks with Sabocsik scoring on a Volpe double to left. Wilmot followed with her three-run blast.
North Penn loaded the bases with no outs in the third and extended its lead to 9-0 on three straight hits – Wilmot’s two-RBI double, Gianna Cimino’s RBI single and a DiGiuseppe RBI double.
Central Bucks East 3, Souderton 2 (9) >> Souderton broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the ninth but Central Bucks East ended a three-game skid with three runs in the bottom of the inning – Elise Waddington’s RBI double giving the Patriots the walk-off victory.
Sierra Ripka gave the Indians a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run home run to left.
East’s rally came with two outs in its half of the ninth. Taylor Molesky tied the game with a two-RBI triple to left. After an Amelia Funston walk, Waddington’s double brought home Molesky.
Riley York was 3-for-4 while Sierra Miller went 2-for-4 for Souderton (12-5, 4-3 SOL Colonial), which had a three-game win streak snapped.
Indians starting pitcher Abby Burns took the loss despite strikeout out 15. She allowed three runs – all unearned – on four hits and one walk in 8 2/3 innings.
Elizabeth Gray was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Patriots (10-6, 5-2 SOL Colonial). Alexandria Frenia pitched the last 3 2/3 innings to get the win for East, allowing two runs – both earned – on five hits, walked one and struck out three.
Quakertown 4, Upper Dublin >> Syd Andrews struck out 17, LauraRose Morelock provided insurance with a solo home run in the top of the fifth and Quakertown held off Upper Dublin to win its ninth straight.
Morelock was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Ava Beal went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored while Skyler Williams was 2-for-4 with a run for the Panthers (14-2, 6-1), who plated two runs in the first then went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Chloe Foster’s two-run homer to left pulled Upper Dublin to within 3-2 but Morelock led off the fifth with a solo blast, putting Quakertown up two.
The Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth but Andrews got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Lauren Carboni was 2-for-3 for UD (8-7, 2-5 SOL Liberty), which had a three-game win streak snapped. Foster took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs – two earned – on 11 hits, no walks and eight strikeouts.
Andrews allowed two runs – both earned d- on three hits and did not walk a batter.
Hatboro-Horsham 5, Plymouth Whitemarsh 0 >> Kendal Leitner struck out 16 in a four-hit shutout while Kayla Tauber went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored as Hatboro-Horsham bounced back from its first loss to pick up an SOL Liberty win.
Kristen Meyers led off the game with a triple then scored on Tauber’s RBI single. The Hatters (14-1, 7-0 division) made it 2-0 with a run in the fifth then added three more in the seventh.
Megan Mills scored twice for HH while Leitner struck out the first six batters she faced before Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Emily Caffrey tripled to open the bottom of the third. Leitner, however, got two strikeouts with a pop out in between to end the inning.
Starting pitcher Molly Moore took the loss in a complete-game effort for the Colonials (9-7, 2-5), who dropped their second straight. Moore allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits, walked two and struck out six.
In the top of the fifth, Mills scored on an error to give the Hatters a two-run lead. Hatboro-Horsham went up 5-0 in the seventh on RBI singles from Tauber and Abby Waeltz and an RBI sacrifice fly from Amya Lundy.
Wissahickon 8, Abington 4 >> Luca Penna went 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI and a run scored as Wissahickon plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-1 as it earned an SOL Liberty win.
Danielle Ciliberto was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three run scored while Katelyn Fitzgerald finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice for the Trojans (10-6, 4-3 division), who took a 2-0 lead with a run each in the first and second.
Abington scored a run in the top of the third but Wissahickon pushed its advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the frame on RBI sac flies from Grace Franczyk and Emily Fox.
Alexis Iademarco was 2-for-2 with a walk for the Trojans while Franczyk had two RBIs
Lauren Everitt went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Galloping Ghosts (7-8, 0-7). Aneesa Rorher finished 2-for-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Penna hit an RBI single then scored to make it 6-1 on Fitzgerald’s RBI single two batters later. A Franczyk RBI single and Charlotte Horvat’s RBI ground out put Wissahickon up seven.
