Reporter/Times Herald Softball Roundup: Bensalem holds off Pennridge’s rally; Abington tops Tennent
Bensalem 11, Pennridge 10 >> Pennridge almost completed a late nine-run comeback, scoring four runs in the both the sixth and seventh get within a run. But with Rams runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bensalem got a strikeout and fly out to center field to hold on for the victory.
Pennridge’s Catelyn Thrush had a two-run home run in the fourth and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Madison Silber was 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Rams (3-10, 1-4 SOL Colonial) lost its sixth straight.
Mackenzie Kramer’s two-run home run in the top of the fifth gave Bensalem an 11-2 lead. Pennridge cut the margin to 11-6 in the its half of the sixth as Reagan Bauman scored on an error and RBI singles from Silber, Mackenzie Owens and Olivia Crognale.
The Rams loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Silber made it 11-8 with a one-out, two-RBI single with an error on a Cassandra Schillo fly ball allowed another run home. Owens’ RBI single to left put Pennridge down just 10-9 but came up empty the next two at-bats.
Emma Lostracco homered and doubled in going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two run scored for Bensalem (5-8, 1-5 SOL Patriot). Kramer was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Maggie Formichetti was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Angelina Sponheimer was 2-for-3 with a run and Destiny Howard had a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Bauman finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Owens was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Schillo went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
After a run each in the first and second, Bensalem scored six in the third – two coming in on Lostracco’s home run to center – for an 8-0 lead. The Owls went up 9-0 in the top of the fourth before the Rams broke through with a pair in the bottom of the inning.
Abington 6, William Tennent 3 >> Lauren Everitt was 3-for-3 with pair of doubles and two RBIs as Abington led 5-0 after the fifth and held off William Tennent.
Jess Sokolski went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Galloping Ghosts (5-6, 0-5 SOL Liberty) and also pitched a complete-game victory, giving up three runs – all earned – on nine hits, walking three and striking out six.
Annie Sokolski was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Madison Cornell collected two RBIs and Lauren Schenk scored twice as Abington earned its fourth win in its last five games.
For William Tennent, Meg Curtis went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored while also striking out 12 in taking the loss in a complete-game effort. Gigi Demito was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, an RBI and a run scored with Katie LaPlaunt going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
In the top of the third, Schenk brought home the game’s first run with an RBI single. Everitt followed with a two-RBI double to right for a 3-0 Ghosts lead. Abington increased its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth when Cornell hit a two-RBI single to right.
Tennent plated a run in the bottom of the sixth but the Ghosts went up 6-1 with a run in their half of the seventh.
Hatboro-Horsham 17, Springfield-Montco 0 (3) >> Tess Kearney and Kendal Leitner both hit three-run home runs in the bottom of the second while Leitner also pitched three perfect innings as Hatboro-Horsham remained undefeated.
Leitner collected five RBIs, scored three runs and struck out eight of the nine batters she faces while the Hatters (10-0, 4-0 SOL Liberty) put up four runs in the, six in the second and seven in the third.
Kristin Meyers and Marissa Rapino each went 3-for-3 – Rapino hitting two doubles and finishing with an RBI and run scored with Meyers adding an RBI and three runs.
HH’s Abby Waeltz doubled twice in going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored, Amya Lundy had a double, two walks, two RBIs and three runs and Kayla Tauber hit a double and scored three runs
Springfield (1-9, 1-4 SOL Freedom) lost its sixth straight.
Truman 10, Central Bucks West 4 >> Lauren Molenari’s two-run home run pulled Central Bucks West even 3-3 in the top of the fourth but Truman answered with three in the bottom of the inning then added three more in the fifth as the host Tigers stopped a two-game losing streak.
Teyanna Towner was 2-for-2 with a home run, two walks, two RBIs and four runs scored for Truman. Emily Kuvulic also homered and went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Mara McKeon was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs.
Courtney Nau finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Tigers while Hannah Smith had two runs scored.
The Bucks’ Abby Lineman hit a solo home run in the seventh and was 2-for-4 as West (1-11, 0-5 SOL Colonial) lost its third straight.
Truman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Towner’s leadoff homer then plated two runs in the third on consecutive RBI doubles from McKeon and Nau.
The Bucks knotted things its half of the fourth as Allison Mackwish scored on a pass ball and Molenari connected on a two-run shot to left. In the bottom of the fourth, McKeon’s BI single put the Tigers’ 4-3 while an error on a Jalecia Blackston grounder allowed two more runs home.
Truman extended its advantage to 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a Devin Ross RBI ground out, Towner RBI single and Towner scoring on an error. Kuvulic made it 10-3 with a solo homer in the sixth.
Upper Dublin 15, Cheltenham 0 (3) >> Chloe Foster finished with four RBIs – three coming on her three-run home run in the bottom of the second – and pitched a three-inning no-hitter as Upper Dublin cruised to an SOL crossover victory.
Kaelin Penna went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Cardinals (6-6, 1-4 SOL Liberty), who led 6-0 after the first frame, plated four in the second then added five more in the third.
Rachel Bilger was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs while Foster recorded seven strikeouts and walked just one as UD won for the third time in its last four games.
Quakertown 15, Lower Moreland 0 (3) >> Ava Beal was 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs as Quakertown scored seven times in the first and second innings as it cruised to a sixth consecutive victory.
Syd Andrews and Abbey Wagner combined to throw a three-inning perfect game for the Panthers (11-2, 4-1 SOL Liberty), Andrews striking out all three batters she faced in the top of the first while Wagner struck out four in pitching the final two frames.
Emma Hilton hit a walk-off RBI double in the third and finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jenna Geiger had a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Andrew collected two RBIs while Wagner scored twice.
Lower Moreland (2-6, 2-2 SOL Freedom) lost its fourth straight.
