Reporter/Times Herald Softball Roundup: DiGiuseppe, Sabocsik both homer, North Penn wins 4th straight
North Penn 11, Bensalem 0 (5) >> Carley DiGiuseppe and Sarah Sabocsik both hit home runs while Mady Volpe struck out 10 in a two-hit shutout as North Penn claimed its fourth straight win in the SOL nondivision contest Wednesday.
DiGiuseppe was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Julia Shearer went 2-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs for the Knights (10-1, 5-0 SOL Colonial). Gianna Cimino finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored, Rachel Lowry was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Sophia Collins collected two RBIs.
Volpe added an RBI single in the top of the first to give North Penn a 1-0 lead while in the circle gave up a walk and a pair of single. After a CR North base hit with one out in the bottom of the third, Volpe retired the last eight Indians batters, the final four by strikeout.
The Knights extended their lead to 5-0 with a four-run second – Sabocsik bringing in the last three with her three-run homer to right.
After a Collins RBI single in the third made it 6-0, North Penn added another five runs in the fou rth. The Knights plated the first two on an error and passed ball. A Cimino RBI single put NP up nine while DiGiuseppe capped the game’s scoring with her two-run homer to enter.
Council Rock South 10, Pennridge 9 >> Pennridge led 8-3 after a four-run top of the fourth but Council Rock South scored the next seven then held off the Rams’ comeback bid in the seventh.
Down 10-8 in the top of the seventh, Pennridge had runners on second and third with two outs when a Caitlyn Thursh grounder brought in one but the Golden Hawks got the tying run out at home to end a three-game losing streak.
Olivia Crognale was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Thrush went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run while Reagan Bauman finished 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs scored for Pennridge (3-9, 1-4 SOL Colonial), who dropped their fifth straight. Cassandra Schillo was 2-for-4 and Grace Helbling had two RBIs.
Allie Kitson went 3-for-3 with a walk, double, two RBIs and a run scored for CR South (4-7, 0-4 SOL Patriot). Kaylie Walters had a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Kayla Patricelli posted two walks, two RBIs and two runs while Grace Stepp had an RBI, two runs scored and walked twice.
The Rams scored a run in the top of the first then went up 4-0 in the second on a Crognale RBI single, Bauman RBI double and Thursh RBI single. South pulled to within 4-3 with three in the bottom of the third but Pennridge plated four in top of the fourth. Consecutive RBI singles from Helbling and Madison Silber made it 6-3. Helbling scored when Anna Hensler reached on an error while a Katie Buccafuri RBI single put the Rams up five.
The Golden Hawks plated a pair in the bottom of the fourth on a Kerri DeSpirito bases-loaded walk and Patricelli scoring on a wild pitch. CR South then took the lead with four runs in the fifth – Walters tying the game with a 8-8 with an RBI double then scoring to go-ahead run on Patricelli’s sac bunt.
A Kitson RBI single in the bottom of the sixth added would ended up being a necessary insurance run for the Hawks.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 4, William Tennent 1 >> Molly Moore struck out 16 in a complete-game four-hitter and Plymouth Whitemarsh answered William Tennent pulling within 2-1 in the top of the sixth by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning as the Colonials claimed a four straight victory.
Lauryn Kane was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Regan Gehman went 2-for-3 with a run scored for PW (7-5, 2-3 SOL Liberty), which scored a run each in the third and fifth. Moore gave up an unearned run, hit two batters and did not allow a walk.
Katie LaPlaunt finished 2-for-3 for the Panthers (4-2, 2-0 SOL Freedom), who had a two-game win streak stopped. Mackenzie Clee led off the top of the sixth with a triple then scored Tennent’s lone run on a two-out error.
The Colonials, however, responded in its half of the sixth. Hayley Lindley made it 3-1 with an RBI triple then came home on a Julie Price ground out.
PW took a 1-0 lead in the third on Talia Carr’s RBI ground out with a Kane RBI single in the fourth put PW up 2-0.
Hatboro-Horsham 10, New Hope-Solebury 0 (5) >> Kendal Leitner and Alyssa Tooley combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter while Hatboro-Horsham scored half of its runs in the bottom of the second in winning the SOL nondivision game to stay undefeated.
Amya Lundy hit a two-run home run in the fourth and finished with three RBIs and two runs scored while Tess Kearney was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Hatters (9-0, 4-0 SOL Liberty).
Leitner, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, struck out all nine batters she faced in he first three innings. Tooley completed the no-hitter with a walk, a hit batter and four strikeouts in the fourth and fifth frames.
HH’s Marissa Rapino was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Kayla Tauber had two RBIs.
The Hatters took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Lundy RBI sac fly then went up 6-0 in the second as Leitner scored on an error on Kristin Myers’ bases-loaded grounder then back-to-back two-RBI doubles from Kearney and Tauber.
After adding a run on a Leitner single in the third, the Hatters scored three more in the fourth – Kearney coming home as Tauber reached on an error with Lundy hitting a two-run homer to center for a 10-0 lead.
Abington 19, Springfield-Montco 6 (5) >> Springfield tied the game 5-5 with four runs in the top of the third but Abington answered with four in its half of the inning then erupted for 10 runs in the fourth and went on to earn a five-inning victory.
Julia Bruestle broke the 5-5 tie with her two-run home run and finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Galloping Ghosts (4-5, 0-4 SOL Liberty), who won their third straight.
Leanna Schenk was 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, Annie Sokolski went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two run scored while Bella Oquendo was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Jess Sokolski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three run scored and also earned the complete-game pitching victory, allowing six runs – two earned on four hits, walked four, hit one batter and struck out one.
Also for the Ghosts, Meghan Strange also 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. Madison Cornell had a double, three RBIs and two run scored, Anessa Rorher collected three RBIs and Lauren Everitt had two RBIs.
Abington sent 16 batters to the plate in its 10-run fourth, getting five runs on bases-loaded walks. The Ghosts plated the other five on a pair of Bruestle RBI singles, an Everitt two-RBI single and a RBI single from Schenk.
Abington grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the first before Springfield got a run in the second before pulling level 5-5 in the third. But in the bottom of the inning, Bruestle put the Ghosts ahead for good with her two-run homer while Rorher’s two-RBI single gave the Ghosts a 9-5 advantage.
Upper Dublin 16, Lower Moreland 0 (5) >> Gretchen Wolpert was a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 as Upper Dublin cruised in the SOL nondivison matchup.
Wolpert collected an RBI double in the top of the third, hit a two-run home run in the fourth then had an RBI single in the fifth as the Cardinals (5-5, 1-4 SOL Liberty) won their second straight.
Lauren Carboni was 3-for-4 with an RBI for UD while Chloe Foster had three RBIs and struck out seven and pitching a three-hit shutout. Rachel Bilger went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs with Anna Levin going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Kaelin Penna scored three runs with Ally McDaid hitting a double and scoring a run.
Upper Dublin plated five runs in the third to go up 6-0 then scored four in the fourth and sixth in the fifth.
Lower Moreland (2-5, 2-2 SOL Freedom) lost its third straight.
