Delco Sports Roundup: O’Hara lacrosse team enjoys first success against nearby rival

Cardinal O’Hara’s girls lacrosse team can check Springfield off its list of teams it has never beaten.

The Lions erupted for eight goals in the second half and handed the reigning PIAA Class 2A champion a 10-5 defeat. It was O’Hara’s first win against Springfield.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Lions forced a tie at halftime and dominated the second half. Rachel Familetti tallied three goals and one assist to lead the O’Hara attack. Mia Scarduzio (one assist) and Lexi Culp managed two goals apiece. Ellie Miller contributed a goal and two assists.

Mackenzie Hand was outstanding in net with 12 saves. Ana Ciminera, Em Camuti, Kristen Kutufaris, Maddy Sharkey and freshman Lily Marquis excelled on defense for the Lions.

Erica De Stefano scored two goals for the Cougars.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Henderson 13, Sun Valley 2 >> Carli Komorowski and Riley Basht each scored a goal for the Vanguards. Tali Carotenuto and Carmen Morrone had the assists.

Boys Lacrosse

Matt Ellison was the hero in Springfield’s 9-8 win over Wissahickon.

The Cougars scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter — Ellison’s being the game-winner.

Jack Clark produced three goals and an assist. Robbie O’Brien finished with two goals and two helpers, while Matt Dickinson tallied twice.

Ethan Johnson turned aside eight shots in goal for the Cougars.

Ridley 18, Oxford 1 >> Anthony Laber registered three goals and three assists in the Green Raiders’ shellacking of the Hornets. Nate Desmond, Reece Millison and Owen Bosak also netted hat tricks. Gavin Kingsborough managed a goal and three helpers and Blaise Harris found the back of the net twice.

Bosak and Sean Kelly won all but two faceoffs. Goalies Sean Righter and Jake Bosak combined for seven saves.

Episcopal Academy 13, Cape Henlopen 10 >> Dylan Jascdz led the way for the Churchmen with four goals. Tristan Whitaker posted three goals and TJ Lamb recorded a goal and three assists. Lucas Slate chipped in with a pair of tallies. Goalie Nash Womack made nine saves.

Upper Dublin 8, Haverford 6 >> Andreas McKendry had a pair of goals and Quinn Carson, Nick Hand and Jimmy Klein all scored once for the Fords.

Baseball

Jake Stacey’s late solo home run proved to be the difference in Haverford School’s 6-4 win over Bonner-Prendergast.

Jonny Flieder and Mike Tallarida each went yard for Haverford. Tallarida’s dinger was a three-run shot that evened the score.

Ryan Reed hurled six innings with nine strikeouts. Eric Genther and Will Ferris collected two hits apiece in the victory.

Episcopal Academy 9, St. Joe’s Prep 5 >> Winning pitcher Shane Lawler pitched four innings with three Ks and one earned run. Michael Cadden picked up the save for the Churchmen.

Tyler Beaulieu, Jake Fant and Jake Jaszcz led a balanced attack at the plate with two hits apiece.

Jack Hurda, Tyler Beaulieu, Jake Jaszcz and Alex Barrist all scored two runs.

Downingtown West 7, Sun Valley 3 >> Colin Porter had a nice day at the dish (2-for-3, double, three RBIs), but the Vanguards fell. Ikon Jones rapped a pair of hits.

Josh Lillis scattered five hits and gave up no earned runs in 3.2 innings. He struck out five.

Malvern 16, Penncrest 4 >> Twelve Friars banged out at least one hit off Penncrest pitching, which yielded nine walks. Christian Reed was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Lions.

In the Central League:

Conestoga 3, Haverford 2 >> Liam Collins delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning, but the Fords (0-2) couldn’t pull even with the Pioneers (1-0), who jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Chris Dempsey doubled in the loss for Haverford.

‘Stoga’s Shane McCullen allowed no hits and struck out four over 4.2 scoreless innings to get the win. Drew Lamonica went 2-for-3.

Softball

Madison Gibson’s four-hit day helped Cardinal O’Hara claim a 14-9 Catholic League victory at Hallahan.

O’Hara plated seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Gibson belted a home run and had two RBIs. Meredith Hannigan added three knocks, including a homer, and two RBIs. Maeve Boston (two runs, two RBIs), Rylie Pellegrino (two runs) and Caitlin Jordan all collected two hits.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Downingtown West 10, Sun Valley 1 >> Brianna Lawson provided the lone highlight for the Vanguards with a solo homer in the first inning.

Girls Tennis

Niki Lavu and Gavin Schmidt each were victorious in singles competition as Episcopal Academy defeated St. Joe’s Prep, 4-1, in a nonleague match.

The pairings of Pete Dugery and Dhilan Lavu and Xin Xin Feng and John Bishop each won in straight sets.
