Conwell-Egan Catholic softball captures fifth straight District 12 crown
PHILADELPHIA – Conwell-Egan Catholic (CEC) captured a fifth consecutive District 12 Class AA championship with a 5-3 win over Philadelphia Academy Charter (PAC) Thursday afternoon, June 1 under cloudy skies at La Salle University.
After topping the Chargers 13-0 in last year’s title tilt, the Lady Eagles had to sweat this one out.
While Egan (9-12) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and two in the second, PAC deadlocked the score with a 3-run rally of its own in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, CEC junior Tori McCoach provided the winning edge in the most dramatic fashion when she crushed an offering from Chargers pitcher Riley Walker over the fence in left-centerfield.
Classmate Alyssa Michniewicz followed with a double and third baseman Alyssa Adams drove her home with a hit to the base of the wall in left field.
McCoach – who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored – started the game off with a single to left field then came around to score on Brittany Porter’s single to center field.
In the second inning, with sophomore Emily Wang (error) and senior Kate Moss (single), respectively, on second and third base, McCoach pushed her first run across with a single to centerfield. Michniewicz followed with a run-scoring single to left field, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
PAC (15-3) pushed all three of its runs across in the third inning on four singles and a double by catcher Liz Marynowitz.
Conwell-Egan, which had a 12-9 advantage in the hit column, advances to states, which will begin Monday, June 6 against the District 3 runner-up.
Ashley George and Kate Moss each had two hits in support of winning pitcher Alexis Gartner, who scattered nine hits.
