Roundup (April 26): Owen J. Roberts’ Talan Nguyen, Jack Sawicki claim PAC Doubles tennis championship

Boys’ Tennis

Owen J. Roberts’ Talan Nguyen and Jack Sawicki won the championship match of the Pioneer Athletic Conference Doubles tournament Friday afternoon at Spring-Ford.

Nguyen and Sawicki defeated Methacton duo Akash Suresh and Arnav Tinari in a back-and-forth battle, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 in the final.

Nguyen completed a PAC title double after winning the league singles tournament on April 15.

The Wildcats’ top pair needed three sets in the semifinals as well, rallying past Upper Merion’s Kamron N’goran and Gavin Jacobs, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

N’goran and Jacobs took third place, defeating Upper Merion teammates Josiah Kotright and Dillon Doan in the medal match, 6-2, 6-3.

The top four finishers qualified for the District 1 tournament, to be held May 10.

Baseball

Upper Merion 8, Pope John Paul II 6

Upper Merion delivered one of the surprise results of the season Friday with an 8-6 win at one-loss Pope John Paul II.

The Vikings scored five in the fifth and tacked on three in the seventh for the winning margin.

Four walks in five batters gave UM a 6-6 tie before David Peck’s line drive led to a two-run error and Upper Merion’s lead.

Andrew Prendergast was 2-for-3, including a two-run single in the pivotal fifth, for Upper Merion, which was out-hit 14-6 by PJP.

Dylan Roberts preserved the UM lead, pitching 1.2 innings of hitless ball, striking out four in relief of Q Sarne (5.1 IP, 14H, 6ER, 5K).

For PJP, Tyler Tindall was 4-for-4, AJ Diaddezio was 3-for-3 and Carson Glose and Dylan Simeone had two-hit games.

Spring-Ford 6, Perkiomen Valley 5

Nick Flores’ solo home run in the bottom of the ninth sent Spring-Ford to an extra inning PAC Liberty win over rival Perk Valley Friday.

Flores was 3-for-4 and Ryan Cecconi drove in three runs for the Rams (3-4, 7-4, 9-5), which rallied from 4-2 down after three innings and plated a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Cecconi RBI single to force extras.

For PV (1-6, 4-7, 5-9), Tyson Gilbert had a double and home run and J Tarloski was 3-for-4.

Pottsgrove 14, Pottstown 0

The Falcons exploded for 10 first-inning runs and rolled past the Trojans in a crosstown PAC Frontier game Friday.

Brandon McGinley had two RBI triples in the big first inning and Luke Tyson’s two-run single (3-for-4, 3 RBI) was another big blow in the frame.

Gabe Rinda (3-for-3, RBI) and Owen Mountz (2-for-4, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit games for Pottsgrove. Zayd Rogers, Blayne Bainbridge and Ricky Scott combined to throw five scoreless innings of three-hit ball.

Perkiomen School 3, Germantown Academy 1

Henry Clausell pitched a complete game allowing only one hit and no earned runs to propel Perkiomen School to a 11-1 record. Perkiomen scored all three of its runs in the fourth. Sammy Laux led off the inning with a home run, Zach Mayza got an RBI with a squeeze bunt and Bobby Kleckner followed with an RBI single to end the scoring.

Softball

Perkiomen Valley 3, Spring-Ford 2

Maci Strechay was elite in a two-hitter over 11 innings and Bella Reedy’s two-run home run in the top of the 11th delivered Perk Valley to an eye-opening PAC Liberty win over previously PAC unbeaten Spring-Ford.

Jess Fliszar was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Spring-Ford (5-1, 9-1, 10-3) after she struck out 18 and allowed only two hits over 11 innings.

After nine scoreless innings, the Vikings and Rams traded single runs under the international tiebreaker rule (innings starts with runner at second), PV scoring on a Payton Mears bunt and SF on an Ashley Eck sacrifice fly.

PV (3-3, 7-3, 11-3) went up 3-1 on the two-run homer from Reedy (2-for-5). The Rams got one back in the bottom half on Addie Eross’ sacrifice fly and had a runner at third when Strechay got the final out via strikeout, her seventh of the game.

Pottsgrove 18, Pottstown 5

Seven Falcons had multi-hit games and 18-hit Pottsgrove defeated Pottstown in five innings.

Hailey Pysher doubled twice, Mikayla Eckman was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Bailey Pysher was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Elizabeth Phillips was 3-for-4 (double) with two RBI and Lizzie McAllister had two hits and three RBI. Winning pitcher Avery Gleason (triple) and Taydem Kelly had two hits each.

Keiara Lesley shined for Pottstown with two doubles and three RBI. Savannah Richards was 3-for-3.

Boyertown 14, Owen J. Roberts 7

All nine Bears had a hit and Boyertown built a 10-2 lead through three innings and proceeded to double up Owen J. Roberts in PAC Liberty play Friday.

Alexis Laboy’s two-run single ignited a four-run first inning and the Bears added a six-run third that was highlighted by an Ella Hurter home run (2-for-4) and Lindsay Mathias two-run single.

Jenna Fox had a home run and double for the Bears, which got two-hit games from Riley Carey and winning pitcher Kyra Neiswender (7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9K)

For OJR, Amelia Atkins hit a grand slam in a five-run fifth inning and Sophia Cerimele was 3-for-4.

Girls Lacrosse

Owen J. Roberts 11, Spring-Ford 4

OJR had four multi-goal scorers in Sierra Milano (2G, 3A), Morgan Karas (2G), Keira Clemson (2G, 2A) and Emery Horn (3G) to control its Senior Night win over Spring-Ford.

Defensively, goalie Korrigan Sweeney made 10 saves while Ashly White, Laina Grimm and Marley Danielsson each had three or more caused turnovers.

Boyertown 19, Perkiomen Valley 9
