Roundup (April 9): Methacton baseball improves to 5-0 behind stellar pitching from Jones, Frank

BASEBALL

Methacton 2, Pope John Paul II 1

Evan Jones pitched Methacton’s first four innings, allowing one run and five hits while striking out six to pick up the win. Austin Frank earned the save with three scoreless innings in relief, surrendering no hits and striking out four. Tripp Shytle went 1-for-3 for the 5-0 Warriors, delivering the go-ahead single in the top of the fifth. Chase McNally also plated a Methacton run with an RBI single.

Luke Terlesky went the first five innings for PJP, giving up two runs on four hits along with three walks and four strikeouts. Carson Glose came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing no runs or hits while striking out two. Chase Frantz went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Perkiomen Valley 2, Upper Perkiomen 1

Mike Strechay tossed 5 ⅓ innings of one-run ball for Perk Valley while also going 1-for-3 and a run scored out of the leadoff spot on offense. Liam McNeill added an RBI single for PV and Aidan Autovino plated another run with a sacrifice fly. Jon Boyd pitched 1 ⅔ hitless innings in relief to pick up the save.

Braden Rieg pitched well for the Indians in the losing effort, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out four in six innings of work.

Pennington School 8, Hill School 5

Matt Conforti went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in his varsity debut, but his effort wasn’t enough to keep Hill School from falling to Pennington School in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League matchup. Robert Pavlek started the game and surrendered seven earned runs in two innings before Pottstown resident Collin Mattis came on to pitch four solid innings in relief. Mattis gave up three hits and one run in four innings of work. Anthony Grosso and Derek Boyd-Volz each had two hits and a run scored for Hill, while Cole White went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

BOYS LACROSSE

Owen J. Roberts 12, Spring-Ford 11

Gabe Dellapenna led the way with five goals for Owen J. Roberts as the Wildcats picked up a thrilling victory over PAC rival Spring-Ford on Tuesday. He had plenty of help, as teammates Brady Calle and Nolan Brown each added three goals. Justin Daubert also scored in the win, with Daubert and Brown chipping in assists as well. Chad Young picked up four saves in goal for OJR.

Brady Welsh tallied five goals in the losing effort, while Ian Evans found the back of the net twice while also picking up an assist. Hayden Wedemeyer (2A), Nick Valerio, Preston Page (assist) and Gavin Roth each contributed a goal for Spring-Ford, and goalie Dylan Cyr had a strong game in the cage, stopping 17 shots.

Upper Merion 11, Boyertown 10

Upper Merion trailed 5-2 at halftime, but the Vikings rallied with six third-quarter goals to get past Boyertown in a tight PAC contest. Kyle Roseland paced Upper Merion with four goals and an assist, with Collin McCormick (3G) and Justin Besz (2G, 2A) also produced multi-goal performances. Casey Lamey (1G, 3A) and Noah Canale also scored in the win, and Ryan Becker won 18 of 25 face-offs. Nathan Uhl made 17 saves in the win.

For the Bears, Mason Barndt tallied four goals and Brayden Kuhar scored three times while also adding an assist. Weston Loshnowsky, Ryder Gehris and Antony Genovese all scored once.

Pope John Paul II 14, Pottsgrove 3

PJP jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one before taking an 8-2 advantage into halftime and cruising to a PAC-opening win over Pottsgrove. Ian Young scored a game-high seven goals while adding three assists, and Brady Kleine found the back of the net three times. Denny Owens, Dillon Murphy, Ryan Lamson and Riley Lumpkin all added a goal for the Golden Panthers. Murphy won 17 of his 20 face-off attempts, and Sean Fallon came up with 12 saves in the cage.

Perkiomen Valley 18, Interboro 3

Perk Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter and led 13-1 at halftime in a dominant victory over Interboro. Six Vikings players notched multi-goal efforts — Jacob Rotay (4G), Aiden Jacoby (3G, 6/9 FO), Bryce Coletta (2G, 3A), Patrick Moloney (2G, 3A, 5/5 FO), Connor Macklin (2G, 1A) and Dylan Holland (2G). Holland and Ryan Valesky each scored their first varsity goal for PV, and Jackson Baker and Matteo LoRegio also scored for PV. Sullivan Roop chipped in two assists, and James Herb had one helper. Sam Dogonnuick made five saves in goal.

SOFTBALL

Boyertown 6, Pottsgrove 3

Boyertown trailed 3-2 through four innings before responding with two runs in the fifth and another two in the seventh to upend Pottsgrove in a PAC cross-division battle. Ella Hurter pitched a complete game for the win, allowing two hits and two earned runs while striking out 11. Hurter also went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored, while Alexis Laboy and Sammy Sobeck each went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Mikayla Eckman pitched all seven innings for Pottsgrove, allowing four earned runs and striking out eight in the losing effort.

Methacton 5, Pope John Paul II 0

Lindsay Gebhardt pitched a complete game two-hit shutout in Methacton’s PAC win over the Golden Panthers, walking none and striking out four. Gebhardt was supported by big days at the plate from Jillian McTamney (2-for-3, 2B, HR, 4RBI) and Madison Krupiewski (1-for-2, 2R, RBI). Mady Polonsky added two hits, including a double.

Lexi DiBricida pitched six innings for PJP, allowing two earned runs and seven hits in the losing effort.

Owen J. Roberts 10, Upper Merion 0

Bella Winnick followed up a four-hit day the game before by going 2-for-2 with a double, triple and five RBI in OJR’s PAC victory over Upper Merion. Liza Flavin (2-for-2, 2 2B, 2R, RBI), Rachel Epps (2-for-2, 2 2B, 2R, 2RBI) and Katelyn Stofko (2-for-2, 2B, 2R) all had multiple extra base hits for the Wildcats. Amelia Atkins and Avery Pollard combined to throw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out four.
