Roundup (Jan. 25): Boyertown, Spring-Ford set up showdown with opening-round wins in District 1-3A wrestling duals

Boyertown 44, Upper Perkiomen 15

A night after being carried by their lower weights, Boyertown’s upper weights did the heavy lifting against Upper Perkiomen by winning the final six bouts to win 44-15 in the opening round of the District 1-3A Duals Thursday night at Boyertown.

A one-point match (16-5) after UP’s Branden Rozanski’s 7-5 decision over Shane Stankina, the Bears got wins from Owen Dykie (152) and Ryder Gehris (160) before JD Heiser pinned at 172, and Joshua Larrimore won by major decision at 189. Boyertown capped the event with a forfeit to Mike Kelleher and pin from Kaleb Dumin at 285.

Gabriel Tulone (114) and Sean Murray (127) had pins for the Tribe.

The No. 3 seed Bears advance to face No. 6 seed Spring-Ford in an all-PAC quarterfinal that will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at Upper Dublin.

Spring-Ford 37, Downingtown East 20

Bonus points boosted Spring-Ford to a 37-20 win over Downingtown East in the first round of the District 1-3A Duals Thursday at the Spring-Ford 9th grade center. The Rams had five pins and didn’t allow any to the Cougars while maintaining an early 15-0 lead in the match.

Brennan McGrann (133) and Jamie Silva (145) pinned in the third matches, sandwiched around Christian Ruiz’s 9-7 win at 139. Other Spring-Ford pins came from James McGill at 160, Mason Richards at 189 and Brady Seislove at 107.

The No. 6 seed Rams advance to face No. 3 seed Boyertown in an all-PAC quarterfinal that will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at Upper Dublin.

The No. 8 Wildcats will meet No. 1 seed Council Rock South, a 58-12 winner over Avon Grove, in the quarterfinals on Feb. 3 at Upper Dublin.

Boys’ Basketball

Pottsgrove 65, Upper Perkiomen 46

A strong night from beyond the arc saw Pottsgrove hit 11 3-pointers, including five from high scorer Gabe Rinda (18 points) in a PAC Frontier win over Upper Perk on Jan. 25.

Deymein Doctor added nine for a Falcon team that had six players hit 3s.

Evan Bosler scored 10 for UP.

Phoenixville got a big night from Max Lebisky and built a 15-point halftime lead that carried it to a PAC Frontier win over Upper Merion.

Lebisky scored 27 for the Phantoms, outdueling the Vikings’ Allen Cole, who scored 25.

Deacon Baratta added 10 for the winners.

The Trojans’ three senior standouts were all on their games Thursday night as Pottstown pulled ahead in the third quarter to edge Pope John Paul II in PAC Frontier action.

Abdul Jackson (game-high 25 points) and Jurrell Young (21) took over in a 28-point third quarter, scoring 10 and 13 respectively, that opened a seven-point lead for the Trojans. Sadeeq Jackson added 21 for Pottstown, which sits atop the division at 7-1 (9-2 PAC) and 13-5 overall.

Caleb Zavertnik and Jason Green each netted 17 for the Golden Panthers (4-4, 4-7, 6-10).

Spring-Ford was devastating from downtown with 12 3-pointers and the Rams stayed atop the PAC Liberty with a victory over Boyertown. EJ Campbell hit three 3s and a game-high 17 points while Jake Dellangelo knocked down four triples and scored 14. Jacob Nguyen added 13 for the Rams (8-0, 11-0, 16-4), who are No. 4 in the District 1-6A rankings.

Jack Greaves led Boyertown with 15.

Katie Nilles scored 10 of her 12 points in the Golden Panthers’ dominant first quarter and PJP cruised by Pottstown in PAC Frontier play on Jan. 25.

Rylee Derecola added 11 for PJP.

Jayanna Hill was the game’s top scorer with 18 for Pottstown, including 8-for-9 free-throw shooting.

Leading 30-29 through three quarters, Phoenixville owned the fourth and took down host Upper Merion in PAC Frontier play.

Kayden Baratta was the engine for the Phantoms with 21 points, followed by eight from Maliyah Warren.

Perk Valley continued its tear through the PAC with a rout of Norristown to improve to 8-0 in the Liberty (10-0 PAC) and 18-1 overall. PV leading scorers were Grace Miley with 16, Grace Galbavy with 14 and Bella Bacani with 13. The Vikings are No. 3 in the DIstrict 1-6A power rankings.
