Upper Perk’s bid for the school’s first appearance in the State tournament fell agonizingly short at they were defeated by Villa Joseph Marie on penalty kicks. VJM opened the scoring in the 30th minute as Shea Riley headed in a corner kick. The Indians responded 8 minutes later as Sarah Straub ran onto a long diagonal cross from Sara Edwards and calmly sent her shot past the charging GK to knot the game at 1-1. Mary Kate Sitko put Upper Perk ahead 15 minutes into the second half with a low driven shot, assisted by Jada Roderick. The Gems, the defending District champs and State runners-up last year, were not to be denied, tying the game less than 10 minutes later on a penalty kick for a handball. Both teams had numerous good chances to get the game winner in regulation and both overtime periods before the contest was ultimately decided on penalty kicks, where VJM scored on their first three shots while the Indians had a pair of shot saved and one off target. With the loss, Upper Perk ends their season with a record of 18-4-0, the best ever in school history.
