Recap
After taking a one-goal lead into halftime, Phoenixville’s girls soccer team’s offense erupted in the second half in a 3-1 win over Pope John Paul II Friday afternoon at Washington Field.
Caroline Flick drilled a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to break the game open as the Phantoms (2-1, 1-1) took a 3-0 lead midway through the second half.
“I think we really just changed our mindset,” Flick said. “We were able to find our forwards a lot more. Me and the other forwards were able to connect and find each other. We changed our mindset a little to more attacking because last game, we focused more on defending.”
Jaime Michaud initially put Phoenixville ahead off a feed from Molly Cirone at the 31:52 mark. It was the first time the Phantoms drew first blood this season.
“It really made our momentum a lot stronger because usually we don’t score first,” Flick said. “Scoring first really pushed us to get those other goals a lot easier.”
With 5:26 to go in the game, junior forward Cameron Schuler put away a penalty kick past Emine Ulcay (five saves) to put Pope John Paull II (2-3, 1-1) on the board. Kyanni Escudero made 10 saves for Pope John Paul II, which was outshot 16-13.
“Coming off of last year, we didn’t score a lot, so being able to get that conference win I think is really gonna get our momentum stronger going into our next games,” Flick said.
