Next wave of talent ready to step in for Reporter/Montgomery/Times Herald girls soccer teams
On a cold night in Hershey, Averie Doughty ended the 2018 girls soccer season in style.
The forward’s tight finish in overtime lifted Souderton over Pennridge in an all-Reporter/Montgomery/Times Herald Class 4A state final, handing the Indians their first PIAA championship. Both Souderton and Pennridge have plenty of quality players to replace, but they along with plenty of other local teams still bring high expectations into the fall.
As usual, there’s no shortage of talent in the area as the chase for championships begin Friday.
Souderton wasn’t the only local team with a historic title last season. After six previous tries, Lansdale Catholic finally broke through to win its first Philadelphia Catholic League championship, another dramatic win in overtime. The Crusaders will look to re-tool as they prepare to carry the “defending champion” label for the first time and fend off annual rivals Archbishop Ryan and Archbishop Wood.
Abington changed over to the SOL American and dropped just one game in winning a conference title. The Ghosts were hit heavy by graduation, losing PA Gatorade State Player of the Year Cam Lexow to Virginia and Kailey Horton to Drexel among a large senior class. Junior Casey Touey is back to try and guide the Ghosts through a second run in the American, but they’ll face plenty of challengers.
Hatboro-Horsham returns nearly is entire roster after finishing second to the Ghosts and making its first District I playoff appearance in six years. The Hatters where the only team to knock off the Ghosts in the SOL and with a potent crew including Emily Thomas and Cam Ryan, they’ll look to push for a league title.
With an underclassman heavy team, Upper Dublin will try to regain its perch atop the American while Plymouth Whitemarsh’s now-seasoned roster will try to have a say in the conference race while trying to secure a second district appearance in three seasons.
Up in Souderton, the defending state champs have a large senior class to replace as well, chiefly midfield duo Sara Readinger (Penn) and Campbell Power (Bloomsburg) and standout keeper Lindsey Pazdziorko (Towson). Doughty, the clutch playoff scorer, is back as is Hannah Alderfer up front and a handful of other returners will form the core of the new-look Indians.
Pennridge made its first state title game since 2011 while also notching a third straight SOL Continental conference title. Staying atop one of the toughest conferences in the entire state falls to a squad also reloading after a strong senior group graduated. Senior Lauren McIntyre, juniors Maddie Angelo and Lindsey DeHaven and senior midfielders Chance Hendricks and Maddie Anderson among others are back.
CB West seems poised to seriously chase the Continental crown after topping Pennridge twice last season. The Bucks lost a couple of standout seniors but have a now-experienced core including Tori Albrecht, Taylor Moyer and Ryan Fitzsimmons will look to improve on last season’s early district playoff exit.
North Penn is under new leadership but the Knights have plenty to be excited about after a second-round district playoff appearance. An athletic and high-energy group, the Knights have a few key cogs to replace but the speed and pressure of co-captains Grace Sacchetti and Emily Schurr and their teammates bring will be a force.
A trio of area teams will look to factor into the AACA race against powerhouse Villa Joseph Marie. St Basil won its third straight District I 2A title last fall and has a nice core of players returning although the Panthers did graduate some quality seniors.
Powered by the return of senior Madison Hornig from injury, Mount Saint Joseph is hoping to reverse its bad luck in close matches last season and get back to the playoffs. Early returns look good for the Magic, who hope they filled their quota of bad breaks a season ago.
Rounding out the Catholic Academies trio is Gwynedd Mercy Academy and a good group of seniors and juniors.Co-captains Mollie Hanson, Peyton Palazzo, Haley Morris and Sarah White will look to guide the Monarchs back to the 3A playoffs.
