The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media Local Roundup (May 17): Mount St. Joseph girls lacrosse edges Marple Newtown in District 1-2A 1st round

GIRLS LACROSSE
Mount St. Joseph 9, Marple Newtown 8: The Mount trailed 7-4 at the half, but rallied for the win in the first round of the District 1-2A playoffs. Katie Westmoreland led Mount with three goals and one assist, while Amelia and Gabby Clair each added two goals. Maggie Rezza also scored for the Magic, while Annie Shields made eight saves in net.

Archbishop Carroll 30, Archbishop Wood 2: Carroll scored early and often in beating Wood 30-2 and advancing to the PCL Championship game on Friday night at Neumann University. Ava Bleckley had 6 goals, 5 assists, and 8 DCs. Machaela Henry added 5 goals, 2 assists, and 2 DCs. Goalies Bridget Robinson and Mae Radar got the win for Carroll and stopped 2 Wood shots. Wood’s goals were scored by Tess Wahrich and Grace Hoeger. Goalie Molly White stopped five Carroll shots.

BOYS LACROSSE
St. Joseph’s Prep 14, Lansdale Catholic 2: The Crusaders fell behind 9-0 at the half and dropped the contest in the PCL semifinals on Wednesday. Jack Kennedy made 23 saves in net for LC, whjile Caleb Moiser and Patch Flannery scored goals. Dan Curran won 12 of 19 faceoffs for LC, who will play in the District 12-2A semifinals on May 30th at Northeast High School.

BASEBALL
Central Bucks West 5, Souderton 2: Souderton held a slim 2-1 lead but CB West finally broke through in the bottom of the 6th with four runs to take the lead and eventual win. Souderton had six hits including two RBIs by Joey Crecca and another clean defensive effort with no errors. Kevin Bukowski paced the West offense with a home run and two RBIs, while Alex Jenkinson picked up the win with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Pennridge 7, Central Bucks South 1: Patrick Mill scattered six hits and one run as the Rams closed out the season with a win on Wednesday. Matt Atchley was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, while Joey Santora also doubled for Pennridge.

Central Bucks East 13, North Penn 4 (8): After the SOL Colonial contest finished seven innings even at 3-3, Central Bucks East erupted for 10 runs in the top of the eighth – Nolan Boehm breaking the tie with an RBI double then bringing in the Patriots’ last two runs with a home run.

Behm, who also doubled to start the third, finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Chase Harland went 2-for-6 with a double, triple, three RBIs and a run while Matthew Rowland was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Joey Wilga went 2-for-5 and scored twice with Chase Fulford collecting two RBIs.

Mario Sgro went 2-for-3 with a run scored with Jack Picozzi going 2-for-5 with an RBI for North Penn.

After East scored twice in the top of the second, the Knights’ Chase Jones homered to lead off the bottom of the inning. North Penn took a 3-2 lead with two runs in its half of the fifth before Harland’s RBI triple knotted things in the top of the sixth.

Hatboro-Horsham 8, Upper Dublin 5: Aidan Eckley was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored as Hatboro-Horsham took a 5-0 lead with a five-run top of the third and held off Upper Dublin for a SOL Liberty win.

Jamie O’Neill went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for the Hatters (12-8, 9-7) while Kenny Lutz was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kyle Dittus finished 2-for-4 with a run scored with Jaxson Bumpus scoring twice.

Upper Dublin’s Jared Levis and Brendan O’Brien both had two RBIs. The Cardinals (14-5, 14-2) got runs in the third and fourth to pull to within 5-2 before Hatboro-Horsham plated three in the top of the fifth for an 8-2 advantage.

Wissahickon 4, PW 0: Shane Henrick hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third in going 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Gavin Malloy and Adam Hajdak combined to pitch a shutout as Wissahickon claimed an SOL Liberty win.

Starter Malloy went six innings, giving up four hits, walking three and striking out four for the Trojans (13-6, 10-6). Hajdak walked a pair in pitching the seventh.

After Henrick’s double made it 2-0, Wissahickon added another run in the third on an error. Jarret Federer made it 4-0 in the fifth with his RBI single. The loss was the second straight for Plymouth Whitemarsh (14-5, 12-4).

Abington 2, Quakertown 1 (8): Quakertown tied the SOL Liberty matchup in the top of the seventh on Cole Reich’s RBI single but Logan Moss gave Abington the win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth.

Matt Worek started the bottom of the eight with a double and went to third on Michael Judge’s sacrifice bunt. Alex Dardaris was intentionally walked to bring up Moss, who came through with a base hit to give the Galloping Ghosts (13-6, 12-4) their fourth straight win. Brayden was 2-for-2 with a run scored for Quakertown (9-11, 8-8).

New Hope-Solebury 7, Upper Moreland 6 (9): Brooks Saft led off the bottom of the ninth with a double with Saul Carmenini following with a walk-off single as New Hope-Solebury earned an extra-innings SOL Freedom win.

Patrick Kilgus was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Upper Moreland, which took a 3-2 lead with a three-run top of the fourth. The Lions answered by plating four in the bottom of the frame to go back up 6-3 but the Golden Bears pulled even with three runs in the top of the fifth. Carmenini finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Saft had three runs scored. Nate Wiseman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs with Charlie Plebani going 2-for-2 with a double and scored twice.

SOFTBALL
Upper Dublin 2, Hatboro-Horsham 1: Kyla Garrison twirled a three-hitter as the Cardinals (15-5, 12-4) picked up the SOL Liberty win on Wednesday. Bella Fiore doubled and singled, while Kaitlyn Zacharia also had two hits for the Cards. Maddie Small delivered an RBI triple, while Kaelin Penna added a go-ahead RBI single. Amiya Lundy was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and two stolen bases for the Hatters.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 10, Wissahickon 0: The Colonials celebrated Senior Night in style with the win on Wednesday. Senior pitcher Molly Moore recorded her 400th strikeout and also went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs, while senior Grace Carney went 1-for-2 at the plate and pitched two scoreless innings. Sam Skivo also hit a home run for PW, while Kalina Childers and Madison Moran hit doubles.

CB West 9, Souderton 2: Taylor Hooven went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as Central Bucks West boosted its district playoffs chances by pulling away from Souderton to end a three-game losing skid.

After the Bucks (9-10, 7-9 SOL Colonial) scored three runs in the top of the second, the Indians cut the margin to 3-2 in the third. West, however, answered with a pair in the fourth then tacked on three more in the fifth to go up 8-2.

Chloe Dryden finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored while Julia Thomas was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Molly Gibson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Laila Murray had two runs scored with Sienna Lawson going 2-for-5 and striking out five in a complete-game win.

Olivia Plinke was 2-for-3 for Souderton (9-11, 7-9), who dropped their third straight.

North Penn 10, CB East 0 (5): Julia Shearer struck out 13 in pitching a two-hit shutout, Gianna Cimino was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and North Penn completed a perfect regular season with a five-inning win over Central Bucks East.

Annabelle Smink went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Knights (20-0, 16-0 SOL Colonial), who took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Sarah Sabocsik was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Brie Wilmot scored twice.

Elizabeth Gray was 2-for-3 for the Patriots (6-14, 5-11).

Quakertown 11, Abington 1 (6): Maya Hellyer was 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs, Leah Schwalm hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third and Quakertown capped an undefeated regular season with a six-inning SOL Liberty win.

Abbey Wagner struck out 14 in a complete-game victory for the Panthers (20-0, 16-0). Schwalm finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Emma Hilton was 2-for-3 with four runs scored while Ava Beal went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Liz Hippel was 2-for-2 for Abington (6-14, 5-11).

Pennridge 2, CB South 0: Grace Helbling threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 14 while allowing two walks and hitting one batter as Pennridge earned its third consecutive victory.

Averi Dockery drove in both runs for the Rams (13-7, 10-6 SOL Liberty) with an RBI double in the first then an RBI sacrifice fly in the third.

Maddy Borowski struck out 12 in a complete-game effort for Central Bucks South (11-9, 8-8). She allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits, five walks and hit one batter.

Garrison struck out eight in a complete-game effort, allowed an earned run on three hits and three walks. Bella Fiore went 2-for-3 with a double for the Cardinals while Kaitlyn Zacharia was 2-for-2.

William Tennent 8, Lower Moreland 1: Morgan Kocher’s bases-loaded double and an error brought in three runs to give William Tennent a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth and the Panthers went on to earn a SOL Freedom win.

Starting pitcher Carlie Nydick struck out 10 in six innings in the circle for Tennent (13-6, 13-3). She allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk.

Liz Neeld hit a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth for Lower Moreland (8-12, 6-10), which had its four-game win streak snapped.
