North Penn ends season with wild win over Plymouth Whitemarsh

WHITEMARSH >> North Penn did not have the strongest start to its season finale when the Knights took on host Plymouth Whitemarsh Friday afternoon.

But the Knights had the best finish.

Kim Phifer scored five goals, including the game-winner in the game’s final minutes as North Penn shook off a rocky start to post a scintillating 14-13 win over the Colonials in what turned out to be the season-ender for both programs.

Phifer and Bri O’Donnell each racked up five goals for the Knights, while PW’s Ali Diamond led all scorers with seven goals.

North Penn shook off a rocky start, which saw the team down 4-0 before most of the fans got to their seats.

“They were scoring early and we were still getting off the bus,” quipped Knights head coach Heather Mellow-Jones. “But after a timeout we regrouped and went into halftime tied.”

The contest was knotted at 8, and both sides went at it hard.

“To me, it looked like nobody wanted to leave their season unfinished,” Mellow-Jones said. “Neither team has had a very good season, and it looked like both sides wanted to finish strong.”

Knotted at 13, PW had a great chance to snap the tie when she went in on goal in the closing minutes.

But the Knights held firm, came back, got Phifer’s goal, won the ensuing draw and were able to run out the clock.

“It was a crazy game, back and forth,” Mellow-Jones said. “And give credit to Kim. She finished her senior year very strong.”
