Ridley, Interboro team up to beat hunger
In a show of solidarity and community service, two rival high schools teamed up for a great cause.
The Ridley and Interboro girls basketball teams played Saturday in a nonleague game, but what they did together off the court matters more than any win or loss. Nearly 10,000 pounds of canned foods were donated as part of the schools’ March For Hunger efforts. The U.S. Army walked to deliver the goods to Loaves and Fishes in Prospect Park.
As for the game, Ridley earned a 48-38 victory behind a strong showing from Izzy Hamlin, who led all players with 15 points. Emma Layden and Brianna Harrison each added nine points for the Green Raiders (6-8).
Madison Diehl, Gina McNamee and Amber Seamen all netted eight points to lead the Bucs (6-6). Marta Walewska grabbed 10 rebounds and Chrissy Carosi had four points, three steals and a block off the bench.
In other nonleague action:
Academy Park 50, Upper Darby 41 >> The Royals (0-13) got within four points in the fourth quarter but the Knights ultimately iced the game at the foul line. Taylor Smith made all of her baskets in the second half as she scored a season-high 15 points to pace the Knights. Reilly Street and Shantalay Hightower had 13 points apiece.
Sophomore Natalie Koskinas had the biggest game of her scholastic career with 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead Upper Darby. Emma Blewett posted 14 points and five assists.
Penn Wood 58, Downingtown West 52 >> Carle Andrews drained the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final period to put the Patriots (6-5) on their way to victory. Saleia Mathews connected on a pair of layups and Brianna Moore converted two free throws down the stretch to wrap things up.
Andrews scored a game-high 21 points and had five steals, four assists and four rebounds. Moore added 19 points, seven steals, six assists and six rebounds, while Khaliah Gordon finished with six points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists.
Henderson 49, Penncrest 36 >> The Lions shot 14 percent from the floor in the first half and Henderson connected on nine of 11 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter. It marked the sixth consecutive loss for Penncrest (7-6).
Showing the way for the Lions was Megan Arndt, who had a game-high 12 points. Grace Harding chipped in with 11 points.
Pottsgrove 57, Sun Valley 32 >> Kate Lannon scored 17 points for the Vanguards (3-9), who were outscored by 22 points after the first quarter.
Christian Academy 45, Wilmington Christian 20 >> Lindsay Haseltine poured in 22 points and garnered MVP honors after leading the Crusaders to victory in the championship of the Wilmington Christian Invitational. Danay Cooks-Green netted 12 points and Britney Dike added 10 for TCA (11-2).
Grace Gormley earned all-tournament recognition.
In the Catholic Academies:
St. Basil 48, Sacred Heart 25 >> The Lions found out why St. Basil is considered one of the top programs in District 1 Class 3A and the team to beat in the Catholic Academies. Eileen Piombino finished with a team-high 13 points for Sacred Heart (8-4, 0-3).
Natalie Kucowski netted her 1,000th career point for St. Basil. She scored all of her 23 points in the first half.
