Pennridge falls to Council Rock North in District 1-6A 2nd round
NEWTOWN >> In the second round of the PIAA District 1-6A tournament, the Pennridge girls basketball team fell on the road to Council Rock North 63-38 on Thursday night.
The No. 23 seed Rams advanced to the second round after stunning 10th seeded West Chester Rustin 51-48 last Friday.
The Indians rolled past the Rams after Dana Bandurick and Sydney Blum scored at least 20 points.
The Indians also had stellar defense, winning the first three quarters before Pennridge took the fourth quarter, 16-14.
Council Rock North started the game in a big way earning a 17-7 lead after the first quarter.
Bandurick shot four three-pointers in the second quarter as the Indians gained a 38-13 lead at halftime.
Pennridge tried to keep up with the Indians in the second half, but the Rams fell short as Council Rock North advanced to the District 1 quarterfinals with the blowout victory.
Highlighting the game for Pennridge was Evelyn Loughery, who scored a team-high 12 points in the loss.
“We just need to come back stronger in the next game,” said Loughery, heading toward the consolation game Saturday. “We just need to keep pushing strong and get stronger for that game.”
Pennridge head coach Mike Elton was pleased with how his team performed against a tough Council Rock North squad.
“They had great shooters and a big size advantage against us and they are a tough team,” said Elton about Council Rock North. “They run a bunch of presses on defense and they are just a solid team.”
“I think being in a tough league really helps us get to where we are in the postseason,” added Elton. “We had a lot of close games and I think that game we had against Rustin really showed us that we can finish tough games strong.”
With the win, the Council Rock North girls basketball squad advances to the PIAA District 1 6A quarterfinals and clinch a spot in the PIAA 6A State tournament.
The Indians will play either Neshaminy or Pennsbury Saturday, February 23 at a time and location yet to be determined.
The Pennridge Rams will be on the road for the third straight playoff game Saturday, February 23 to take on the loser of the Neshaminy/Pennsbury second-round game.
