Haverford High School point guard Mollie Reynolds is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week
The senior point guard and third-year captain, a first team All-Central League selection who averaged 10 points, five assists and three rebounds per game this season, led the Fords in assists each of the last three seasons. Haverford head coach Bridget DiCave said, “Mollie is a floor leader who displays excellent knowledge of the game as well as a very unselfish attitude and true grit. … She is the reason we have been able to get to post season play all [three] of her years at Haverford.” Reynolds will continue her basketball career at Catholic University next winter.
Q: What (to you) has been the most memorable moment of your Haverford basketball career? Could you share your most vivid memory of that moment or game with us?
A: The most memorable game of my career was our game against Strath Haven my junior year. The game went into four overtimes and unfortunately we did not win the game but it was one of the best games I’ve been a part of. It was long, tiring, and hard, but it was a lot of fun especially because Katie Fisher is one of my good friends.
Q: Coach DiCave mentions that you are a floor leader who displays excellent knowledge of the game and offers your teammates every opportunity to succeed by continually finding them open opportunity baskets. As a player who played a key role in getting the Fords to the post-season the past three years, how did you view your leadership role the past three seasons, and as a point guard?
A: In my junior year Rosie [O’Halloran] was a key component to our game. She was a great shooter and one of our lead scorers. The past season Ashley Murphy was a key three point shooter, Amanda [Battista] and Bri [Blair] were also a huge help inside in every game. We had a lot of freshmen this year that were a great spark off the bench. They would come in and change the whole pace of the game.
Q: What do you think is the strongest aspect of your game? What part of your game are you working on most at the current time?
A: Handling the ball and driving to the basket are my strongest aspects of the game. I am working hard to improve my shot and left hand before college begins.
Q: You wear uniform jersey No. 14 – does this number have any particular meaning to you – is there a reason you chose it?
A: My older brother picked No. 14 when he was younger. I wanted to be like him so I also selected No. 14. He wasn’t very happy with my [pick], but the number has just stuck.
Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.
A: Before games I like to listen to music and get focused. If we are able to get in the gym and get shots up before games that’s always an advantage.
Q: Who have been your biggest basketball mentors, and what was the important thing each of them taught you?
A: My dad was a big mentor for me. He was my first basketball coach in the Highland Park league. He also coached me in CYO basketball. Mr. Quinn was my seventh- and eighth-grade CYO coach, and he had a huge impact on my game and really helped me become a better player. Chris and Katie Gardler also helped me become the player I am today. Letty Santarelli was my AAU coach from fourth grade on and she greatly influenced the player I am today.
Q: Why did you choose Catholic University? What do you think you’d like to major in?
A: Catholic University is a great school in a great location. The team dynamic and the coaches had a big impact on why I selected the school. It was a place I could see myself enjoying, on and off the court. I will be majoring in nursing.
