Germantown Academy’s Maddie Vizza on fire from 3 as Patriots clinch Inter-Ac title
WHITEMARSH >> It’s been a great week for Germantown Academy’s Maddie Vizza.
The senior point guard opened the week with a career game Monday. She posted a personal best 29 points against St. Elizabeth (Del.) and hit nine three-pointers.
She followed that with a 22-point game against Baldwin Tuesday, hitting four shots from three-point land.
To finish the week Friday, she scored 16 points in a 65-33 win over Agnes Irwin. She hit five three-pointers without playing a minute in the fourth quarter.
For the week, Vizza averaged 22.3 points and six three-pointers per game as the Patriots went 3-0.
“Kudos to my teammates for finding me and getting me open,” Vizza said. “They’re making some really great passes to me off of screens and stuff. It’s been good to knock some down from deep.”
“(Vizza) is a terrific floor general,” GA coach Sherri Retif said. “She distributes the ball and everything. I just love her mental focus. She is in the gym all the time working on her game. She’s a great connection between the coach and the players on the floor.”
Vizza added three assists and a rebound in Friday’s game against Agnes Irwin. Her 16 points were second to Jessica Moore, who had 17.
First start for Bennett
Patriots freshman Kendall Bennett made the first start of her career against Agnes Irwin. She scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.
“She’s very comfortable out there,” Retif said. “She works hard every day. I know coach (Andre) Strothers has been working with our post at practice and they just keep getting better and better.”
Bennett stepped into the top eight rotation and more playing time when senior Elle Stauffer suffered an injury earlier in the season.
Another Inter-Ac title
Friday’s win clinched an outright Inter-Ac title for Germantown Academy. It’s the Patriots sixth straight league title, with the senior class holding a 46-1 Inter-Ac record heading into Tuesday’s regular season finale at home against Springside Chestnut Hill.
“I love these seniors,” Retif said. “It’s an amazing group of girls who share the ball. They work hard every day at practice. They’re just so much fun. They just set the tempo every day at practice.”
“This senior class is really special,” Vizza said. “We just had an awesome run through the four years here at GA. It just feels awesome to clinch this last title, finish out our senior year strong. It’s been an awesome run.”
