Germantown Academy rolls past Freire Charter at Jim Fenerty Make-a-Wish Tournament
WHITEMARSH >> Germantown Academy jumped out to a substantial lead early and pushed itself to a 64-15 victory over visiting Freire Charter as part of the Jim Fenerty Make-a-Wish Tournament Saturday night.
“We wanted to work on our offenses. We were winning by so much so we wanted to work on that so when it comes to a closer game, we know what we’re doing,” said Isabella Casey. “I think it worked out. We got good reps on offense and we played a few different types of defense.
“We still need some work but I think we’re getting better every time we play. And I think we’re on the right path.”
GA found tremendous balance on the offensive end.
“We have girls at every position,” Casey said. “We have a lot of size, good ball handlers, good shooters, so we have a good mix of different positions, which really helps. And we’re starting to work on playing together better.”
Sam Wade led the way with 22 points and 10 others contributed points, including Kendall Bennett with eight.
“It was an easy game but it allowed us to keep moving the ball and we got a chance to get the ball inside and out and practice the fundamentals,” Wade said. “I think we’re getting better as a team – better chemistry.
“We’ll have a better season than last year because we’ll have more games and more of a chance to grow closer as a team.”
GA’s defense also executed its plan on Saturday.
“I like on-ball defense: man or two-three zone works really well for us,” said Wade of the mix. “We’re good down low, getting rebounds.”
