Furey leads Episcopal past Villa Maria at Blue Chip Classic
Villa Maria learned that containing Episcopal Academy’s Elodie Furey in the low post is not a simple task.
The 6-2 junior exploded for a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Churchwomen claimed a 46-29 victory at the Blue Chip Basketball Super Sunday Classic at Spring-Ford High.
Furey, who had three steals and three blocks for the Churchwomen (10-7), earned player of the game honors.
“She was having success early and we kept going to her,” EA coach Chuck Simmonds said. “She’s was very active today and she’s been pretty consistent with her scoring.”
Luca Mamula finished with 13 points for Episcopal.
In other games at the Blue Chip Classic:
Notre Dame 60, Lansdale Catholic 37 >> Notre Dame coach Mary Beth McNichol said that her team’s shooting at the Blue Chip Sunday morning was the best she’s seen from her group all season. The Irish (15-4) drained 13 3-point field goals, including four by game MVP Kristen Rogers.
Rogers led a balanced scoring attack with a game-high 14 points to go with five rebounds. Casey Walsh and Mandy McGurk each sunk three shots from beyond the arc. Walsh finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while McGurk had 12 points and six assists.
Cardinal O’Hara 65, Central Bucks West 50 >> Kenzie Gardler had a day to remember for the Lions (16-2).
The Villanova-bound sophomore guard scored a career-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Gardler was 6-for-6 from the floor in the second half.
Perhaps surprisingly, Gardler’s performance did not garner game MVP recognition. The honor went to All-Delco Mary Sheehan, who notched a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sheehan was a point shy of matching her career best of 24, which she set last season.
Monsignor Scanlan 62, Archbishop Carroll 52 >> Down a point after three quarters, the Patriots were outscored, 19-10, in the final eight minutes of regulation.
In the loss, Molly Masciantonio was named player of the game after scoring a team-high 22 points. Bella Sorrentino (16 points) and Lexi Kucia (10) also reached double figures for Carroll (9-9).
Pope John Paul II 44, Agnes Irwin 33 >> Freshman Lindsay Lane (13 points) was named player of the game on the Agnes Irwin side.
