Pope John Paul II punched its ticket to the PIAA Class AAA playoffs with a 56-51 win over No. 2 seeded Merion Mercy on Saturday afternoon.
Steph Petery and Gabby Troisi led the way accounting for 33 points in the Golden Panthers’ third-place game to conclude the District 1-AAA playoffs. Petery scored a game-high 17 while Troisi poured in 16 and point guard Rachel Yerger added 12, connecting twice from downtown.
A 23-10 third quarter advantage gave the fifth-seeded PJP the advantage after trailing by two points entering the half.
Merion Mercy saw Jada Smith (15 points) and Gabby Heinsinger (12 points) each hit double digits while Bernadette McGeever added eight points.
Last season, Pope John Paul II was ousted in the first round of the PIAA-AAA playoffs against Berks Catholic.
