Pope John Paul II 44, Phoenixville 37 >> The combined efforts of four players enabled the Golden Panthers (8-2, 6-1 PAC Frontier) to catch and overtake the Phantoms (7-4, 6-1 PAC Frontier) on the way to claiming a share of first place in the PAC’s Frontier Division Friday.
With PJP down four (34-30) and one minute left in regulation, Lainey Owens (10 points) made a driving layup to cut the difference to two. After Phoenixville’s Aubrie Breisblatt converted a free throw to make it 35-32, Amelia Kennedy (11 points, seven steals) hit a three pointer from four feet past the top of the key at the buzzer to tie the game at 35 and send it into overtime.
On the Panthers’ first possession in overtime, Owens hit a three pointer; on their next possession, Tess Crossan (10 assists) made a driving layup that put PJP up by five, 40-35. Kayla Ciuba and Kennedy each drilled a pair of foul shots to give the Golden Panthers the win.
PJP was 8-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter and overtime. Haley Jackson cleared 11 rebounds for the Panthers, while Kallan Bustynowicz added eight boards and five blocks.
