The Pope John Paul II girls basketball team claimed the Frontier Division’s No. 1 seed with a 55-36 win over Pottsgrove leading up to this week’s Pioneer Athletic Conference Final Six playoffs.
Monica Rapchinski scored a game-high 14 points for PJP while Kayla Mesaros scored 10. Elise Sylvester finished with eight points, Lauren Ciuba scored seven and the Golden Panthers used a 16-4 second-quarter advantage to set the tone.
With the win, PJP (9-1 Liberty, 9-4 PAC, 13-8 overall) edges out Upper Merion (9-1, 9-4 11-10) for the top spot based on District One power rankings criteria. Upper Merion finishes as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5-seeded Methacton on 6 p.m. Thursday at Boyertown. The Golden Panthers are awarded a first-round bye and will play in the semifinals at Boyertown at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Sierra Potts and Riley Simon scored 13 points apiece for Pottsgrove in the loss.
