Blomstrom dials long distance in win for Agnes Irwin
Alex Blomstrom had a game to remember Tuesday afternoon.
The Agnes Irwin sophomore dropped in a game-high 24 points and made six 3-point field goals to lead the Owls to a 49-28 nonleague victory over West Catholic.
The Owls took full control of the contest with 21 points in the second quarter. Caroline Coyne added eight points for the Owls.
In other nonleague action:
Episcopal Academy 40, Archbishop Carroll 24 >> Lily Kuntz scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half and sophomore Seanna McNamara netted 11 for the Churchwomen (3-0) in a battle of preseason Super 7 teams.
EA (3-0) limited the visiting Patriots (1-1) to 11 points through the first three quarters. Molly Masciantonio excelled in defeat with a game-high 16 points while making four 3-point baskets.
Notre Dame 49, Villa Maria 27 >> Casey Walsh put forth a solid all-around game for the Irish (2-0) with nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman Mandy McGurk had eight points and five steals, while Rachel Ryan chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Upper Merion 54, Interboro 48 >> A wild, 34-point overtime period ended with the host Bucs (0-3) on the
losing side.
Interboro’s Gina McNamee hit the game-tying shot late in the fourth quarter to force the extra session. McNamee had six points in both the fourth quarter and overtime period on the way to finishing with a game-high 17 points.
Amber Huddell added 11 points in the loss.
Upper Moreland 51, Sacred Heart 48 >> The Lions (0-2) received 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks from Madison Schneider. Jaycee Webster, who was 5-for-5 from the foul line, netted a team-high 14 points and Eileen Piombino contributed 11 points and three assists.
Sacred Heart had trouble containing Jenna Getz, who poured in 24 points for the visitors.
In the Central League:
Garnet Valley 54, Marple Newtown 34 >> The two-time defending Central League champions jumped out to a 22-4 lead after one quarter and cruised to victory in their season opener.
Maddie Ireland poured in a game-high 18 points on seven field goals, including two 3-pointers, for the Jaguars (1-0). In her varsity debut, freshman Emily McAteer had 10 points, five steals and five rebounds.
Nicole Barnes added nine points and eight steals, Kerry O’Donoghue grabbed six rebounds and Sam Tomasetti netted seven points for the Jags.
Julia Lynch and Olivia Young paced the Tigers in defeat with eight points apiece.
Ridley 43, Strath Haven 31 >> The Green Raiders broke the game wide open in the fourth quarter when they outscored the host Panthers, 25-10. Hannah Crowley (five points), Hailee Mayer (nine) and Dana D’Ambrosio (five) scored all of their points in the final stanza.
Mel Malseed finished with a team-high 12 points and Izzy Hamlin chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Green Raiders (2-1, 1-0).
Katie Fisher handled the scoring load for the Panthers, netting 28 of her team’s 31 points. The senior guard was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Radnor 55, Upper Darby 26 >> Allison Lanzone dumped in 11 points, hauled in eight rebounds and made four steals to help the Raiders to victory in their season opener. Kristen Hamlin (eight rebounds), Nicole Massimino and Racquel Razavi each contributed nine points for Radnor, which jumped out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter.
Emma Blewett and J.P. Gallagher tossed in eight points apiece for the Royals (0-3, 0-1).
Harriton 48, Haverford 34 >> The Fords had no answer for Harriton freshman Alana Swift, who was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Swift finished with 15 points and was 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. As a team, Harriton converted 24 of 26 attempts from the free-throw line.
Brianna Blair paced the Fords (1-2, 0-1) with a team-high 14 points while Mollie Reynolds dumped in 10.
Lower Merion 43, Penncrest 41 >> The Lions (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season after shooting only 23 percent from the floor. Grace Harding paced the Lions with 11 points and Corinne Mulhern tossed in 10.
Sarah Fitzpatrick led the Aces with 17 points.
Conestoga 47, Springfield 34 >> Jordan and Madison D’Ambrosio helped keep the Cougars (0-2) afloat with eight points each. Madison also pulled down six rebounds.
In the Bicentennial League:
Christopher Dock 52, Delco Christian 37 >> In their season opener, the Knights couldn’t build on a five-point halftime lead as they were outscored, 35-14, in the final two periods.
Shirley Piotrowski scored 14 points and Alex Thompson added eight for the Knights.
Dock’s Lanae Hunsberger did most of her damage in the third quarter, scoring 13 of her game-high 19 points, including 6-for-6 from the free-throw stripe.
