West Chester East names assistant Stephen as new head coach

WEST GOSHEN >> It didn’t take long for West Chester East to find its new head football coach.

Less than a week after Dave Gueriera left to take the head coaching position at Malvern Prep, the Vikings looked inward for their new leader.

Scott Stephen, who has been an assistant at East since 2009, spanning three head coaches, was named Tuesday to be the head coach of the Vikings.

“We are very excited to have Scott lead our program,” East athletic director Sue Cornelius said. “The program is in good shape and Scott will take it further. He is very structured and organized and the kids know him and they are very excited.”

Stephen, who played collegiate ball at Franklin & Marshall and has been an assistant under Doug Costin, Dan Ellis and Gueriera, is excited to take over the reins at East.

“I am thrilled to take over the East program,” Stephen said. “we want to be known as a very disciplined and structured team and one the school and community can be proud of.”

East was 5-7 last year and the Vikings broke a 10-year playoff drought and graduated many key players, but Stephen said was to be expected.

“That is the nature of high school sports. We graduated some talented players but now it is up to the underclassmen to take over and work hard in the summer for their chance.”
