Upper Moreland’s John Knight shines in next-day win over Upper Perkiomen
It took a long time, but Upper Moreland got its first win of the season against Upper Perkiomen Saturday.
The game started Friday night, but the lightning storm in the area caused it to be halted and resumed the next day.
The Golden Bears trailed by one touchdown when the game was stopped and trailed by two touchdowns after it restarted before exploding for 48 points in a 48-33 win at Upper Moreland High School.
Quarterback John Knight was at the forefront of the comeback. He threw for three touchdowns and ran in another to get the Golden Bears to 1-2 on the season.
It was Caleb Mead, however, who got the Golden Bears scoring started. He posted their first two touchdowns — starting with a 76-yard run.
After UP extended its lead to 21-12, Knight hit Titus Green for a 71-yard score to cut the Golden Bears deficit to three, 21-18.
Safier Brown followed that with an interception returned for a touchdown to give Upper Moreland its first lead, 24-21. The Golden Bears never trailed again and took the three-point edge into halftime.
Knight really started to dominate in the second half. He connected with TJ Troxel for two touchdowns, but Upper Perk responded both times to make it a 40-33 Golden Bears lead.
Knight had the final answer — a 35-yard touchdown run to seal the deal and give Upper Moreland a 48-33 victory.
The Golden Bears will try to carry this momentum forward when they kickoff their Suburban One League American Conference schedule Friday night at Quakertown at 7 p.m.
Springfield’s Perry stays hot
Springfield quarterback Max Perry started the season fast and kept it going in the second game to lead the Spartans to a 2-0 record.
After accounting for four touchdowns in the opener, the senior posted four more Saturday to lead Springfield to a 43-14 home win over Valley Forge Military Academy.
He threw three touchdowns in the win — all to senior wide receiver Wilson Krewson — and rushed for a one-yard score.
Springfield built a 43-0 before Valley Forge got on the board in the final three minutes of the third quarter.
On the defensive side, Spartans cornerback Brennan Fluehr grabbed an interception.
Springfield has out-scored its two opponents 86-14 through the first two weeks of the season and will host Academy of the New Church Friday at 7 p.m.
Tennent falls to Truman
William Tennent allowed a touchdown on the first play of the game Saturday against Harry S. Truman and it did not get much better from there.
The Panthers quickly fell behind 15-0 before scoring their first touchdown, but that’s as close as they’d get the rest of the way. Truman scored the final 34 points to claim a 49-7 win at William Tennent High School.
Tennent will try to even its record at 2-2 Friday when it travels to Souderton at 7 p.m.
