Unionville rolls over rival Kennett

East Marlborough >> The staples to Unioville’s success is its stout defense, stellar running game, and productive special teams unit. All three areas shined in helping the Indians roll over Ches-Mont League American Division rival Kennett 42-7 on a crisp autumn Friday.
The Indians (4-0 league, 6-2 overall) couldn’t have asked for a better start in the Battle of Route 82. After forcing the visitors to go three-and-out, they jumped on the scoreboard on their first offensive play. After making two defenders miss, running back Brandon Boon exploded down the left sideline for the 41-yard touchdown.
“My offensive line pushed everybody down the field,” the senior said. “All the credit goes to them. They opened up a giant hole and I just had to go through it.”
Boon finished the night with 148 rushing yards, 41 receiving yards, and four touchdowns.
At the opening of the second quarter the home team extended its lead to 14-0. This time Boon followed his offensive line and two fullbacks for the three-yard score.
“They make it so easy,” Boone said. “I appreciate everything those guys so much. I can’t do anything without them. They did an awesome job tonight.”
Halfway through the second stanza, Unionville used some tricky to break the game open. Coming out of a timeout on 2nd-and-5, quarterback Brendan Boyle threw a sideways pass to backup quarterback Jason Hagen. The senior made the reception and then floated the ball 41 yards into the end zone to a wide open Boon.
The senior running back tacked on his fourth touchdown on an 11-yard run, sealing the halftime score at 27-0.
“We wanted to come out and play well early,” Unionville head coach Pat Clark said. “We had a slow start against Great Valley. When you can get points on the board and make the other team chase you, that’s always a good thing.”
In the second half it was much of the same. Dante Graham and Tyler Marmo each reaped the benefits of the Indians’ strong offensive collecting rushing touchdowns and keeping the game out of reach.
“Our offensive line is really coming together,” Clark said. “The kids have really worked hard. We have a bunch of skilled players and they really take advantage of the opportunities our offensive line presents.”
The Blue Demons (1-3, 2-6) finally got on the scoreboard in the final frame. After piecing together a nice, running back Myles Robinson sprinted into the end zone from three yards out.
“We fought really hard tonight,” Robinson said. “We’ve lost a lot of guys to injuries and it’s a tough part of our season. On that touchdown run I had a lot of anger built up and just wanted to punch it in for our team.”
Unionville’s defense and special teams also played extremely well. They held Kennett to 1-for-11 on third-down conversions and 203 total yards. The special teams tossed in three blocked punts.
Next Friday Kennett will host Oxford for its senior night and Unionville will travel to Octorara to face the winless Braves.
