Unbeaten Central Bucks South football runs away from Council Rock South (VIDEO)

NEWTOWN – In the wide world of sports, one team’s pleasure is the other’s pain.

Unbeaten Central Bucks South pushed its way to 3-0 with last night’s 39-13 destruction of winless Council Rock South.

The Golden Hawks lost the field position battle in the first half and went into the intermission trailing the Titans, 20-0 after CB South senior running back Cole Braccio came down with an acrobatic 28-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Sam Thompson on fourth down with six seconds to play in the second quarter.

“That was a big play. The quarterback made a nice read and bought some time and Braccio made an outstanding catch,” said CB South head coach Tom Hetrick. “It was definitely a good way to end the half.”

The Titans started the game off with a 45-yard touchdown run by senior running back Tyler Watson, who bounced in between the tackles then veered right on his way to the end zone only 2:16 into the contest.

“It’s a game of confidence,” said Hetrick. “Any time you can come out and make a splash play early, it hopefully feeds the confidence in which you play

“That was a good way to start the game.”

After giving up the early score, the Council Rock defense clamped down, forcing the Titans to punt on their next two possessions. The Hawks were having their own troubles advancing the ball, however, and were forced to punt from their own goal line after an ill-advised catch of a CB South punt at the two yard line.

Watson returned the kick to CR South’s 18 yard line and senior Nate Norris tallied the first of his two rushing touchdowns with a 3-yard scoring burst up the middle that put the Titans on top, 13-0 with 6:21 to go in the first half.

The Hawks failed to capitalize, however on an interception by junior Ryan Kilgariff late in the second quarter. Three plays later, CR South junior quarterback Christian Jabbar was sacked at the 10 yard line, forcing the Hawks to punt the ball away for the fourth time in the second quarter.

This time, Watson returned the ball to CR South’s 32 yard line, giving the Titans another short field with which to work.

Try as he might, Jabbar could not help his team capitalize on a 43-yard pass he threw to sophomore Andrew Vera that gave the Hawks a first down at CB South’s 7 yard line on CR South’s second possession of the game. Sophomore Sammy Vaniver pushed forward for a yard and Jabbar got four more but neither an end-around by the quarterback to the left nor to the right resulted in a touchdown for the Hawks.

Coming back from the break, Rock South failed to capitalize on a fourth-down sack by sophomore defensive end Nick Gallo that gave his team the ball back near midfield. On first down, Jabbar tossed the first of three second-half interceptions, this one picked off by CB South junior cornerback Ryan Watson.

Norris capped a 66-yard scoring drive with his second touchdown, going in from the five to put the visitors on top, 27-0. The Titans managed to capitalize on the possession, despite facing a 1st-down-and-27 at their own 45 yard line.

The Hawks received a big boost when Gallo picked up a blocked Titans’ punt and ran it 15 yards into the end zone for Rock South’s second touchdown of the season. They were further ignited when senior Marco Mendes recovered an ensuing onsides kick by Rock South.

Senior Tyler Watson came through this time for the Titans on defense, latching onto an ill-advised Jabbar aerial at the 20 and returning it all the way to the Hawks’ 35 yard line

On first down, Braccio caught his second touchdown in the contest, this one good for 35 yards, putting CB South on top, 33-7 late in the third quarter. For the game, he caught four passes from Thompson, good for 115 yards.

While junior Shane Carter returned the ensuing kickoff to the Titans’ side of the field on Rock South’s next possession, once again, the Hawks failed to take advantage. While a 15-yard facemask penalty on CB South gave Rock South the ball at the enemy’s 30, the Titans took the ball back when sophomore Matt Tobey latched onto a ball that came loose on second down.

With CB South junior quarterback Jack Johns out with an injury, the visitors inserted classmate Ryan Shoch into the game. Shoch answered the call with a 44-yard rumble that gave the Titans the ball inside the 20. The junior QB then handed the ball off to sophomore Jake Layer, who took the rock 15 yards to the house, putting CB South on top, 39-7 with 10:50 still to play.

“It was fun to see some of the guys who don’t normally get onto the field,” said Hetrick. “We think we have a lot of guys who can make plays so we distribute the ball to different people and see what they can do.”

Rock South senior running back Alex Nordenholt ripped off runs of 12 and 21 yards on his next two touches but a third interception in the second half by the Titans – this one by senior Sean Carlen – sent the ball back the other way.

With sophomore quarterback Bradley Kraut taking the snaps, the Hawks finished the game off with a 63-yard scoring drive. Kraut went in from the one with just 19.4 ticks left on the clock.

Next Friday, Rock South begins conference play with a battle against Suburban One National conference rival Harry S Truman set for 7 p.m. at Walt Snyder Stadium. The Tigers registered their first win of the season last night at William Tennent.

CB South begins league play with a battle against Suburban One Continental rival CB East 7 p.m. at War Memorial Field in Doylestown. The Patriots are 2-0 with a game today against PAC-10 rival Methacton.
