Streeter, Lansdale Catholic, streak past West Catholic in shutout victory
LOWER GWYNEDD >> One electrifying score by Jacahi Streeter deserves another, and the sophomore speedster’s two touchdowns provided the sizzle in Lansdale Catholic’s 14-0 shutout of rival West Catholic Friday night.
“We wanted it real bad,” Streeter said of the win, on a cool, crisp Homecoming Night at Wissahickon High. “We came off a two-game losing streak so we really needed this.”
The victory raised LC’s record to 6-3 and improved its Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division mark to 3-3 on the season. The Crusaders cap the regular season Saturday night at 6 against Cardinal O’Hara, at Wiss.
West Catholic, held to negative yardage in the first half by a dominating LC defense, slipped to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the PCL Blue. The Burrs are at Bonner-Prendie Saturday at 1 p.m.
“We got O’Hara next. We just need to get back to the drawing board, watch film and see,” Streeter said. “And get a win for the seniors their last time playing here (at Wiss).”
Lansdale Catholic opened the scoring with 10 seconds to go in the first quarter.
On a 3rd-and-14 at the LC 42, quarterback Cole Meehan took the snap, avoided the pressure, and quickly threw to Streeter in the flat.
LC’s 5-foot-7, 150-pound dynamo caught the short pass and streaked up the left sideline, racing away to a 58-yard score and a 7-0 Crusader lead.
Said Streeter: “That got us the momentum that we needed. I felt I just had to do it for my team.”
That would be the only score of the first half.
The Crusader defense swarmed West Catholic. Josh Brown had a sack and Jon Dang recorded a key tackle for a loss, as the Crusaders held the Burrs to just two first downs in the opening half.
It looked like LC might add to its lead early in the second quarter but the Burrs were able to get a pair of sacks to thwart the drive.
The first half ended with LC’s Chris Ulmer sacking West Catholic quarterback Kal-El Durham back at the Burr 34.
West Catholic, which got a pair of interceptions by Owen Suah (including a one-handed stab), opened the third quarter with its first sustained drive of the evening.
Power running by Jiare Greene (35 yds) keyed a 14-play, 77-yard march. But on 3rd-and-11 at the LC 18, Durham was intercepted in the end zone by Yeboa Cobbold, who wrestled the ball away from his receiver to give the ball – and momentum – back to the Crusaders.
LC’s defense kept thundering along, with Evan Lojewski crashing the pocket and coming up with a pair of sacks.
After the interception by Cobbold, the LC defense forced a punt and a turnover on downs to close out the evening. The Burrs were held to 36 yards on the ground, 65 through the air.
Streeter, meanwhile, got loose again.
With LC leading 7-0 with under four minutes to play, Streeter turned out the lights, weaving his way to a 70-yard TD run that put the game out of reach.
“I broke it, and as soon as I saw daylight, I was like, ‘I’m going,'” he said with a smile. “We faced adversity, came back and scored. It got all the fans going and we just did it for them.”
