Springfield-Montco blanks Thomas Edison

SPRINGFIELD >> It was the win that the Springfield Spartans desperately needed and they got it in dominant fashion.

After a tough 34-28 loss last week to Kensington, the Spartans cruised to a 54-0 shutout victory over Thomas Edison on Friday afternoon.

Even though Springfield was leading 47-0 during the fourth quarter, it was the junior varsity squad that stole the show on the final drive of the game.

With the junior varsity team facing a varsity squad for the first time this season, they celebrated like they won a national championship when John Adams ran for a 44-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the game.

“I have been working hard all week for this moment,” said Adams. “I definitely needed that touchdown at the end.”

“I have to thank the guys with the blocks for me and I am totally speechless,” added Adams.

After the touchdown run, it was a moment that kicker Jack Hyland will never forget when he kicked his first career extra point.

“I really wasn’t expecting to go out on the field today,” said Hyland. “I want to thank John Adams for getting the touchdown so I could have this chance.”

In total, the Spartans scored eight touchdowns against the Owls with Cam Dennis scoring two 18-yard rushing touchdowns and catching a 10-yard touchdown pass.

“We grind every day at practice,” said Dennis. “We were hungry this week after a tough loss last week and the whole team came out and we got what we wanted.”

Dennis was also thrilled for the junior varsity’s performance at the end of the game.

“The JV team proved that they can hang with other varsity teams and they did a great job today,” said Dennis.

Springfield quarterback Gabe Franzyk had a stellar performance as well throwing six completions for 77 yards and three touchdowns.

“After last week, we had to bounce back in a big way,” said Franzyk. “We were pretty confident heading into today after a great week of practice and we got the big win because of it.”

“We have a big game next week,” added Franzyk. “So with a big win like this, our confidence level is sky-high right now.”

Springfield head coach Chris Shelly was speechless after a dominant performance against Thomas Edison.

“It means a lot to our guys to get a win like this,” said Shelly. “Last week was about us growing up and learning how to play football. We felt like we had something to prove and I have to give Edison a lot of credit because the coach does well with the kids he has and they play hard.”

“This game was also about us wanting to play the level of football that we are at,” said Shelly. “It was great to get the young guys out there, but this game was about what we can do on both sides of the ball and we still have a lot of room to grow.”

“The junior varsity guys are running the same plays that our varsity guys are playing,” said Shelly. “Adams was running like a varsity player and Jack made a great kick so it was great to see our young guys have some varsity experience.”

The Springfield Spartans will hit the road on Saturday when they travel to Middleburg for a 2 pm kickoff against the Midd-West Mustangs to start a three-game road trip.
