Season preview: Berks Section 1
Section 1 Preview
Governor Mifflin
Classification: AAAA
Head coach: Mick Vecchio
2014: 11-2 overall, 6-0 Berks 1 (champion)
Outlook: Mustangs must cover losses of do-everything QB/LB Jan Johnson and RB Wilson Fontanez. Defense is promising, led by twins Tucker and Lucas Garner at DE. Reduced potency may snap four-season section unbeaten streak.
Exeter
Classification: AAAA
Head coach: Matt Bauer
2014: 8-3, 5-1
Outlook: If games are won in the trenches, Eagles have an edge, with Michael Menet and Nate Weber leading the way. Must start over at QB, with star Chase Yocum now at Shippensburg U. Favorite to unseat five-time defending section champ Mifflin.
Conrad Weiser
Classification: AAA
Head coach: Alan Moyer
2014: 7-5, 3-3.
Outlook: Scouts are led by QB Tyler Hoss and RB Koran Jordan on offense. Weiser looks to keep the good times rolling with a ninth straight winning campaign.
Daniel Boone
Classification: AAA
Head coach: Bill Parks
2014: 8-5, 3-3.
Outlook: Blazers doubled their win total last season from the year before and are trying to maintain the upward trajectory. With a strong returning group headed by quarterback Nick Hughes another trip to districts may await Boone at season’s end.
Muhlenberg
Classification: AAA
Head coach: Pat Sisk
2014: 2-8, 1-5.
Outlook: Sisk is in his first season and is overhauling the Muhls. Team will feature a 4-4 defensively. But the rebuild is daunting. Patience required.
Pottsville
Classification: AAA (D-11)
Head coach: Tom McGeoy
2014: 0-10, 0-6
Outlook: Can’t get any worse. There are bright spots for the youthful Crimson Tide, led by RB/CB Darion Jacoby. Haven’t won since regular season finale in 2013 (27-7 over Twin Valley).
Reading
Classification: AAAA
Head coach: Rob Flowers
2014: 6-5, 3-3
Outlook: Promising. The Red Knights return a ton of starters on both sides of the ball, a season after making districts for the first time in decade. Look out for speedy RB Kaury Mauras.
